What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Last year's shutdown of @glitchdotcom🎏 Glitch was a blow to my pedagogy. Glitch was ideal for creative coding classes and workshops. I looked around for alternatives. But there was nothing that was open, decentralized, and not at the mercy of VCs or Big Tech.

So I built my own. Here's Glitchlet.

Glitchlet runs on any shared hosting service (e.g., Reclaim Hosting). If you can run WordPress, you can run Glitchlet. Projects-in-progress are stored in the browser's local storage, but you can also one-click publish to make them public and remixable. Glitchlet is designed with educators in mind.

There's no single, primary Glitchlet that everyone uses. The idea is that every instructor installs their own Glitchlet and manages their own classes/workshops/projects. You can seed your instance with template files, or Glitchlet can easily import projects (including archived Glitch .tgz files).

Making something so easy to install and host has trade-offs, of course. No fancy pants Node or React projects, but Glitchlet works beautifully with HTML/JavaScript/CSS. No live collaboration, but you can still remix published projects.

Best of all—you're in control and not subject to the whims of some startup that suddenly decides to "sunset" a key pedagogical tool.

Glitchlet is alpha now, but its code will available to all very soon!

@sbrlStarbeamrainbowlabs's 2 laws of artificial intelligence:

1. AI will always hallucinatinate
2. AI will always be biased

AI is like a dictionary. It stores the important things in the training dataset in its memory. Then it matches against them when queried. Anything outside of what it learnt matches results in an inaccurate answer.

Data is generated by humans, who are inherently biased. We can't account for biases we don't know about.

What matters is not really AGI and media hype, but how we understand how models work, apply them appropriately, and continually work to understand and deal with bias as best we can - just like with irl.

Yaknow when you use something every day and it just works fine so you don't mess with it and you stop learning about it and it's just There, in the background, quietly and undramatically doing its thing

Anyway I actually looked at Jabber today (also XMPP) and huh, mov.im looks actually kinda interesting if I can get it to work

Oh go on, have a hashtag

btw I'm still very available for hire!

Full-Stack Software Engineer experienced with System Design / Architecture, Software Development, Computer Security, and other DevOps processes (Testing, Deployment, Operations, Monitoring). Experienced with Cloud, On-premises (bare-metal), and Embedded system environments. Excellent team player described as "genuine", "charismatic", and "a joy to work with" by current and former leadership.

Greatly experienced in Software Development positions, but looking to pivot to a more security-oriented role within the development field, ideally using my experience in Computer Security and Secure Software Development to help build safe and reliable backend software. My ideal job would be a long-term position on a team with a healthy work environment and friendly (but professional) work relationships.

---

Decade of experience in
Software Development and Computer Security, plus non-professional experience in Linux System Administration, Embedded Software Development, and Security Auditing. I've got a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (Cyber Security concentration) and have training in GDPR, PCI, HIPAA, FERPA, and other compliance requirements.

I
work well on a team and have experience with many common work management platforms (Azure DevOps, Jira, RTC), office suites (Microsoft Office, Google Cloud / Workspace, Office 365, Open/Libre Office), and other collaboration tools (Skype, Zoom, WebEx, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams).

My experience is primarily in
C# (DotNet Framework, Core, and Modern), Web Platform Technologies (TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SCSS, SASS), and Relational (SQL) Databases (PostreSQL, Oracle, SQLServer, SQLite), but I'm a quick learner and could easily adopt any technology that's similar to something I know. I have extensive experience with Cloud Development (Microsoft Azure), On-Premises Deployment, and Hosted Servers (VPS, managed, abd bare-metal).

I also have experience in customer support, and while I'm
not willing to accept any IT Helpdesk or Support role, I do believe that experience helps me in the software development field as well. I've been commended by managers for my ability to explain technical information in non-technical terms, work with inexperienced or non-technical staff in a supportive way (I never talk down or judge anyone for lacking knowledge), and participate constructively in cross-functional discussions beyond my area of expertise.

I enjoy a good challenge, as long as I have the support and tools I need. I pride myself in delivering robust, well-tested, and reliable solutions that can last long-term with minimal maintenance requirements or tech debt.

---

While I'm
generally flexible in most things, I do require a position with strong healthcare benefits, remote work options, and an inclusive work environment. I also strongly desire time flexibility to support my role as a caretaker for my physically-disabled wife. I prefer a role that does not use AI-based coding tools, but I'm willing to use them if required.

If this sounds like someone you'd like at your organization, then please send a DM (Private Message)! Resume and professional contact details available upon request. Otherwise, please boost for visibility!

Trusting Trust in the Fediverse

A very long blog post about the various "safety and privacy" features that got added over the years to ActivityPub and how useless they can be in the eyes of users unaware of the inner workings.

There's nothing really new I talk about, but it is a long explanation of my reasoning behind why I don't take "features" such as signed fetches and interaction consent seriously. What can be considered "new" to most, is the last section of bypassing signed fetch enforcement without impersonation, which I talked about probably twice over the years.

(If there are styling issue, tell me. I've written the CSS from scratch, and I suck at it.)

@dansup It's the parent's responsibility to not let kids use social media. If a parent wants their kid to use social media, then no one has the right to interfere. It's about freedom. Nonetheless, If a kid is educated enough to use social media, then let that be. Hell, they even taught us in elementary school how social media works, and it was a powerful tool for me as a kid. Kids aren't as dumb as adults want them to be.

The three most expensive Netflix films are Electric State ($320m), Red Notice and The Gray Man ($200m each). If you're looking at top 5, you've got The Irishman ($160m) and 6 Underground ($150m). I love film. I love art. But if you removed those 5 films from the public consciousness would anything be any different? Would they even be missed? Over a billion dollars on films. Three quarters of a billion quid in real money. 750 times the amount I need to rescue my life and thrive. And for what. Does Michael Bay need that million? The Russo Brothers? Ryan Reynolds? In a 2016 Rolling Stone interview, Bay said that his net worth was around $500 million. He owned a $50 million Gulfstream G550 jet, as well as a Bentley, a Range Rover, an Escalade, a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, and two Camaros from the Transformers franchise. If anyone knows Michael, can they please let him know that I don't bear him any ill will, but I would be really ever so grateful if he would gift me a million pounds ($1,364,900). I would super appreciate it and would really genuinely go out of my way to let everyone know how terrific he is and to encourage them to watch his films even whatever the shit the Transformer franchise is supposed to be. I'll even offer to appear in any upcoming projects free of charge. Totally waive the upfront fee (as long as I get 5% on the backend and any distribution, and I will need my own trailer, and staff - a personal trainer, chef, acting coach, dialect coach, masseuse and hype-person). Hooray for Michael Bay who did NOT direct Heat as I thought - that was actually Michael Mann, Bay instead did Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but for a cool one million I will happily say that is a better movie than Heat. Booo, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and ensemble cast. Hooray for whoever was in TMNT the movie.

If you want to search the Epstein files released by the DoJ, each day they are being uploaded to Jmail.

They’re also being classified and indexed and more added each day. Also more server capacity is being added behind the scenes.

On Discord Alternatives

Next month, Discord is going to start requiring age verification. The backlash from gamers everywhere has been predictable and justified. I guess their company name checks out. I've had a few people reach out to me because of my prior vulnerability disclosures and criticism of encrypted messaging apps. (Thanks, Toggart.) Unfortunately, asking a cryptography-focused security engineer for app recommendations is like asking a rocket scientist to…

💜 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Tor Community

Together, we’ve raised $1,200,200 during our end-of-year fundraising campaign. These funds will fuel our ongoing fight for internet freedom. As our Executive Director, Isabela, said:

“We're continuing with a clear vision: make it easier for people to exercise their right to privacy and access to information with tools that keep us connected, and make it harder for powerful adversaries to break that connection.”

It is depressing if someone experiences hate on here, especially if it puts them off using this place.

I follow people that regularly raise these issues, to hear how bad it is and what the causes are.

Five things seem to come up most often:

- Lack of representation in software design
- Users not being able to control who can reply to their posts
- Moderation being reactive rather than proactive
- Allowlists vs blocklists
- Cultural problems

Let's look closer...

Lange Zeit unvorstellbar.

IF you are a fiction writer, especially of genre fiction, and

IF you would like to work with a professional editor who eschews the use of AI for writing or editing, and

IF you have a final draft sitting somewhere, that's been read by your trusted team of beta readers (you do have beta readers, don't you?), whether it's a short story or a 150K-word novel,

THEN

I might be the editor you're looking for. My specialties are SF/F, historical, horror, thriller, action/adventure, and weird (think William Hope Hodgson, Lovecraft, Blackwood, etc.). It's horror but not pure. It's . . . weird.

Yes, I'm mostly retired, but I'm not gone. I'd love to work with the right client! I've edited for clients around the world, so no worries if you're not in the US (I envy you, these days).

Maybe that is you.

"In the beginning, the Web was simple. When I first encountered it in early 1993 (working for O'Reilly's Global Network Navigator[...]), there was only one browser for viewing web pages and it ran exclusively on the Unix platform. There were about a dozen tags that made any difference. Designing a web page was a relatively simple task."

Ring used the Super Bowl to launch “Search Party,” an AI feature that turns neighborhood cameras into a network to find a lost dog.

This isn’t about lost dogs. It’s about normalizing automated neighborhood surveillance.
