"For me, speculative fiction possesses a delicious and breathtaking capacity for making political theory come to life. When I started my undergraduate degree as a political science major, I'd been an avoid science fiction and fantasy reader for years. The intellectual challenges these genres thrust me into made political theory electrifying and liberatory. I never had to struggle to imagine the new worlds that theorists like Karl Marx, Edward Said, and Franz Fanon implored readers to envision; I'd already been doing that."

Meta aims to introduce
facial recognition to its
smart glasses
while its biggest critics are distracted,
according to a report from The New York Times.

In an internal document reviewed by The Times, Meta says it will
๐Ÿ’ฅlaunch the feature โ€œduring a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.โ€

The document is from last May and reportedly describes the new โ€œName Tagโ€ feature
that would allow smart glasses wearers to identify people using Metaโ€™s built-in AI assistant.
The New York Times reports that Meta initially planned to launch the feature during a conference for the blind before releasing it more widely -- but that never panned out.
Meta, which makes smart glasses with Ray-Ban and Oakley, reportedly plans to launch the feature as soon as this year.

My mate Tom and I have been chatting for ages about what it really means to depend on USโ€‘based tech when you are running an organisation in Europe.

We've now pulled those conversations into something concrete, called . It is for organisations that want a clearer view of jurisdiction, business continuity, and 'quiet' surveillance in their stack.

Hey, if you want your mind absolutely crushed into dust today then read my article at Scientific American about how much energy is released when two supermassive black holes collide. To borrow from Douglas Adams, it's the best bang since the big one.

These two images are the entire story of open source software support in this world, in a nutshell.

Exhibit one is the list of companies who are sponsoring the Linux Foundation, a murderer's row of the largest and most powerful hosting and services companies in the world.

Exhibit two is one dude scrambling to keep the lights on after a raid failure because KTLO for the servers that everyone uses to _download Linux_ are "outside the scope" of the Linux Foundation's "main duties".

In incredible news, the European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly for "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women." Even the center-right European People's Party voted for the declaration. It will form a foundation for their position at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Our latest.

Is anybody of you using self-hosted along with @Codeberg?

I'm just curious whether it is allowed to create dedicated personalized bot users for your own repositories. Couldn't find any hints in the TOS: codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/src/

Using the personal account also for Renovate might reduce clarity and visibility..

RE: med-mastodon.com/@jeneralist/1

So the JKF Jr is not only going to harm people in the USA with his anti-vaccine idiocy, heโ€™s now going to harm people worldwide because Moderna is now no longer going to research vaccines for infectious disease that kill people. While I donโ€™t particularly like pharma companies and their business practices, this is pure stupidity.

Learning about Chat Control. Encrypting data. Ditching age-verified platforms.

Each action = collective power

The threat isn't tech being too powerful. It's people not knowing they have power to fight back..

When I said that your discord clone doesnโ€™t need e2ee, I got a lot of comments along the lines of โ€œ then how would I use it to organize the revolution!โ€ The answer is: you donโ€™t. If you have more users than can comfortably share a Signal chat and hence want to use discord or something like it, you cannot POSSIBLY be vetting all of them to a high standard of trust. Your logs ARE leaking. End-to-end encryption between more people than can fit around a dinner table is pointless.

This article confirms what I already assumed, that โ€œopen source [information sense, not code sense] intelligence gathering on social mediaโ€ includes, for the US government, asking for links to join groups that may *feel* private. My own discord has literally like a thousand idlers. It would be very *lucky* if none of them were logging for potentially nefarious purposes! And I remind the active users of this occasionally.
