Let's get something clear: I DON'T hate VTubers. I appreciate the work—heck, I tried it and realized how hard it is.
I'm just accepting that I'm fuel for the fire.
I adopted the "VTuber Lore Simp" moniker to treat VTubers with the same "Separation of Concerns" we apply to all media. There’s a character, and an anonymous actor giving it life.
The vast majority of VTubers, mods, and viewers can't roll like that. To them, the VTuber is the actor. The lore and worldbuilding? It’s just an overengineered theme.
It lures me in with the promise of Disney World, but it’s actually just an independent theater where the actor is also the ticket taker and the lighting tech. They just want to be themselves; the character is just a skin.
Half of my 20+ Twitch bans came from me defying the notion that it's "just a theme." I commented like they were Mario in a MIRT setup. Restraining myself to "just appreciating the theme" is like asking The Flash to walk a deserted route without his powers.
I’d rather the lore wasn't locked behind a streamer. HoloEarth was a chance for worldbuilding without the baggage of a "dude in an avatar" making ends meet. But even then, enjoying the character there defeats the reason to watch the streamer. It’s like replacing artists with AI—it changes the soul of the interaction.
It's fair enough for me to accept that my time with VTubers is over.
Therefore, on this very return to uwu.social, I’m shielding myself by muting all VTuber-related words/hashtags. They’re already filtered on Twitch (thank goodness for FFZ), and I’m also working my old Katakis Lives branding back into VRChat, Overte, and beyond.
If you're a VTuber and you follow me, I won't prevent you from talking with me. I'm not imposing a DNI on you. But I ask that you respect my stance.
I'm also going to start looking for better media to satisfy my needs. At the very least, I'm looking to return to watching anime and cartoons that align closer to the vibes of how I watched VTubers. I heard the Iyashikei genre is good for that. Ideally, I'm looking closer to what VRChat and Overte have in store beyond gaming worlds. Maybe it's time I give their roleplay stuff a go.
