What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

"高市総理大臣を批判する政党はアンチだとレッテル貼りされ批判する内容が出回るなど、SNSが社会の分断を加速させていた一面もあり、政策論争が置き去りになっていた"

なんとも残念な構図。言論の自由は確保しつつも SNS のあり方は早急に見直されるべき。問題はアルゴリズムなんだろうけど

Am I crazy, or is `pwait` totally broken on FreeBSD 15?

I started noticing various daemons not restarting properly. rc.subr calls wait_for_pids, which calls pwait(1) on the daemon's PID. Occasionally, when running `service foo restart`, I'll get an error saying "foo already running!"

After some investigation, it looks like pwait returns a few milliseconds before the process actually terminates.

Caught in the act...this should NOT be possible:

$ kill 97891; pwait 97891; ps -p 97891
PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND
97891 - REJ 0:01.20 invidious

$ kill -0 97891
kill: 97891: No such process

Must be a race condition somewhere?

On this day in 1990, the Voyager 1 space probe took a photo of our planet from approximately 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) away.

"Commissioned by NASA and resulting from the advocacy of astronomer and author Carl Sagan, the photograph was interpreted in Sagan's 1994 book, Pale Blue Dot, as representing humanity's minuscule and ephemeral place amidst the cosmos."

I am once again putting this out there: if anyone comes into possession of any "low jitter" audiophile snake oil products, i am very interested in actually testing that claim.

We know it won't make your 96kbps mp3 spotify stream sound better, that's not in debate.

But is the snake oil made from real snakes? Did they actually improve phase noise by a measurable amount?

Well put: “To conclude this wrapup of my experience in 2025: more than ever, I still regard the open web as my online home. There are communities I feel like I belong to within it — like the 'open social' community, the Mastodon community, the Eleventy community, etc. Maybe there will eventually be a Cybercultural community! Dear Scammers, Spammers, Bots, and Trolls,
Fuck you. Get off Fedi. No one wants you here.

Dear Mutual Aid Requesters,
Don't act like scammers, spammers, or bots—otherwise you get treated like them. Instead, build community and friends here. Contribute positively. Then folx will want to help you.

Dear Adult Content Posters,
Don't post other folx' nudes without consent. It makes you look like spammers and bots; and it's considered Image-Based Sexual Abuse, as well as copyright infringement—both of which are illegal. Instead, boost local sexworkers / content creators and post your own stuff. Build something positive.

Dear Reply Guys, Sea Lions, and Concern Trolls,
Just stop. Also, you used the wrong *their* again.

Dear Everyone,
Be kind. Support marginalized communities. Write good alt-text. Report predatory accounts. And keep being lovely 💞

Let's keep Fedi from becoming Twitter, together.

We've got a good thing here.

RE: mas.to/@kityates/1160707759715

These measles outbreaks are REALLY BAD news. Measles is a horrible disease with potential for very nasty outcomes long term.

I honestly feel quite hardline about it. If you don't have a measles vaccination (unless legit health-exempt), you shouldn't go anywhere in public. Cos your choices don't just affect you/your children, but affect others, who might not be able to get vaccines.

Screw Andrew Wakefield and the MASSIVE harm he played a huge part in.
