WE NEED DIGITAL MUSEUMS

one huge fall out of devaluing the work of digital archivists and librarians is that is overtaking and burying in search engine results, historically significant .

we cannot leave it to search engines to act as curators, librarians, archivists, auditors, appraisers. techbros goal is profit, not historical significance.

am looking for early 1900s posters. many used to be posted on blogs. all gone. all i find are cheap Adobeslop copies.

I’m trying out , and apart from minor edges, I really like it. I wish more creators would produce content, it’s still a lot of memes, and I never know whether the person I’m currently watching is actually a creator on Loops. I’m sure this will improve once all the app store versions have dropped. I love that there’s an option to use an algorithm, though it needs some work. e.g. Only show me loops in languages I can understand and never show me a loop I’ve already watched. Also, the energy level of suggested loops fluctuates too much for my taste. e.g If I’m calmly vibing with nature recordings, I don’t want to jump into a loud, noisy rock concert with the next swipe.
The UI is simple and beautiful, but the categorized notifications feel unnecessarily complicated. I’d like them all in the same view, maybe separated by tabs if any separation is needed. I will definitely use it to share my animated work. If you want to share something give it a try 💛 🔁

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

Anatomy of bsd.rd
openbsdjumpstart.org/bsd.rd/

"Todo administrador de OpenBSD ha arrancado bsd.rd al menos una vez, para instalar, actualizar o rescatar un sistema dañado. Pero pocos se detienen a mirar qué contiene realmente ese archivo. Resulta que bsd.rd es un conjunto de capas anidadas, y se puede desmontar en un sistema en ejecución sin reiniciar nada."

This is something that probably sounds obvious to some folks and unhinged to others, but I think it’s worth saying anyway: “workers who don’t adopt AI will get left behind” is right-wing propaganda. It’s more than just a surface-level advertising message. It makes the unstated assumption that workers are all in a state of conflict, racing against one another in competition for acceptable employment. This is the literal opposite of class consciousness! All workers should be aiming for a world where we don’t have to fight each other to earn a chance at a decent life.

Highly-trained LLMs are a form of capital. They are produced by extracting knowledge from text which workers have made, and they cannot be made practically useful without vast compute expenditures. The companies which make them seek to recoup their costs by renting them out, primarily to corporations which want to use them to reduce the number of workers which they employ. The facts are straightforward, and the net effect is a wealth transfer from workers to owners.

Current attempts at producing large-scale social or economic transformations via generative AI are an unavoidably right-wing political project.

Before posting "Y sucks", have you perhaps considered you might just personally not like Y?

Before posting "you should use Z instead", have you perhaps considered that other people might just personally not like Z?

People are allowed to have different preferences and desires and priorities. That is part of what makes us human.

If you want to replace Y, *listen* to what the users of Y want. Otherwise you are just shouting into the void, and making them want to try Z even less.

The SSB inspiration is why I placed my bets on AT Proto over ActivityPub. I'm more in favor of a peer-to-peer distributed web than a federated one, but if I had to go with federated I'll take the one that uses PKI for identities.
