개인적으로 사형을 못 따낸건 특검 문제가 더 크다 봅니다. 사형 구형 사유 논지가 “반성의 여지가 없다” 하나 뿐이다시피했어요. 그래서 “인명 피해가 경미했다”는 윤 내란수괴측 반론에 카운터맞은거죠. 기본적으로 사형은 번복불가능한 최고형이라, 구형 시에는 “이 자가 왜 생명을 이어나가선 안 되는지”가 강하게 어필되어야 합니다. 여태껏 나온 사형 구형에 “인간이기를 포기하였다”는 문구가 거의 항상 나온 것도 이때문이었어요. 사형을 받고 싶었으면 완벽하게 윤석열 개인에게 책임을 집중했어야 하는데, 그 빌드업이 너무 약했습니다.

침착하게 생각해보자면 초범 운운은 형사범죄로 처벌받은 전력이 없다는 의미로 모든 자잘한 범죄 전과를 다 포함해서 하는 말입니다. 그러니까 전과 없으면 내란죄에서마저도 참작사유가 되고, 반대로 아무 거라도 처벌 전과가 있으면 아무 죄에서라도 참작이 안 된다는 겁니다. 여기서 어떠한 가정 하나를 세워볼 수 있는데... 몇몇 사람들이 좀 깊이 생각해보고 이게 불똥이 될 수 있음을 인식해야 함.

I've been wanting to write something lengthy about "AI" for a while, discussing the arguments for and against and arriving at a reasonable position, but I find myself completely unable to get past the most glaring point, which is that we are facing catastrophic ecosphere collapse because of capitalist overconsumption. Our species is literally committing suicide by capitalism right in front of my eyes and the architects of the climate crisis have latched onto data centres with the energy budgets of countries running sycophantic Markov chains as their latest engine of short term profit extraction and people are split right down the middle either happily burning the world down to keep continvoucly morging or whatever the newest slop models tell them to do next, or existing in a state of angry refusal to believe that anything is wrong as everything crumbles into ash around them other than that some people have the wrong skin colour or gender presentation.

The few of us who don't starve to death as our food sources collapse may eventually die of asphyxiation when the wrong Amazon finishes burning down.

How do you get past that?

How does one even hope to connect with people who prioritise dismantling the structures of capitalism before it kills us all lower than asking Claude for coding tips?

I guess we know what the Great Filter is now.

Today, 443 days after declaring martial law on December 3, 2024, former President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison for leading an insurrection. The court found that his martial law decree, the deployment of troops to blockade the National Assembly, and the attempt to detain political figures constituted an act of insurrection against the constitutional order.

Many Koreans had hoped for the death penalty—the prosecution had asked for it, and the charge of leading an insurrection only allows three possible sentences: death, life with labor, or life without labor. The court chose life.

I have complicated feelings about this. As someone who believes the death penalty should be abolished, I shouldn't want it imposed on anyone, and in principle I don't—not even on Yoon. But there's a practical dilemma that's hard to ignore. South Korea has a precedent here: Chun Doo-hwan, who led the 1980 military coup and the Gwangju massacre, was sentenced to death at his first trial, reduced to life on appeal, and then pardoned by President Kim Young-sam. He walked free. If the starting point is already life in prison rather than death, it's even easier for an appeals court to reduce the sentence further, and for some future president to pardon him down the road.

So the discomfort isn't really about wanting Yoon to die. It's about the gap between what the sentence says and what actually happens in practice. And that points to a deeper problem: the presidential pardon power. As long as a sitting president can unilaterally pardon anyone—including someone convicted of trying to overthrow the very constitutional order the presidency is supposed to protect—no sentence feels truly final. I'd rather see the death penalty abolished and the pardon power curtailed, so that life in prison actually means life in prison.
