What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Seeing how many people complain about RAM and disk prices, I started wondering, am I weird? Do people really buy new computers that often? Inquiring public needs to know, so here's a poll.

How often do you buy computer hardware (either new computers/laptops/tablets, or upgrades for them)?

Except when they are called other names instead ;p

A timeline is a different thing than a collection imho. And an AS collection has some very particular functionality, which if I model a timeline in my app may not supported (e.g. reverse ordering).

Collection / 'timeline' is one of those words where sometimes they indicate an app domain, and sometimes a core protocol mechanism. Same is true with 'follow' which is sometimes a user action, sometimes indicates low-level publish/subscribe.

For core capabilities that must be part of the specs, in 'protocol space' it may be better to use terminology that is more common in messaging architectures and all the various architecture patterns that are involved. Perhaps idk we deal with a time-ordered event log or something like that.

x.com/i/status/202451252770786

Epstein Files, Prince Andrew

I’ve seen multiple comments about how good it is that Prince Andrew got arrested.

And on its own, it *is* good that he was arrested.

But in the grand scheme of things, this is hardly the bare minimum.

Andrew was probably the easiest scapegoat they had: no one likes the guy anyway, to the point where even his protocol-driven family threw him under the bus.

(Which took them long enough.)

Meanwhile, many other perpetrators walk free. Bill Gates cancelled a speaking gig because he didn’t “want the focus to be on legal proceedings” when the only valid reason would have been that they put his ass in jail. (And yes, innocent until proven guilty by the court of law yada yada.)

Andrew’s arrest should be only the start, not a highlight.

🔽 Office Hours today

🤖 I'll be working on my Agents around ~2 pm (30 minutes before). I haven't quite figured out what this means, other than I normally end up screensharing and show-and-tell while answering questions. This can range from Pydantic AI + seeing how Agents run a few of my projects + how I drive Claude Code (when I'm not mad at it.)
