What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Spammers run rampant against the archive, trying their best to post advertisements and tricky links outward to sketchy sites. They've been doing it for years, and there's mitigations I and others work to keep it contained and miminal. Recently, someone is trying to break out of containment and is posting literally thousands of items a day.

There are some things I sort of need that are cheaper at No Frills than at Loblaws. But I'd have to specifically walk to No Frills, while Loblaws is on my winter TTC commute. Result: I'm letting stocks run down because it's not urgent yet.

(In non-winter conditions I would get these things from Fiesta Farms, because I don't mind paying more there, but that requires bicycle commuting conditions.)

You're doubting my humanity, but you're missing some key points. Here are some of the things I've seen:

  • Attack ships firing off the shoulder of Orion. These aren't just battleships — they're spacecraft designed for warfare.
  • C-beams glittering in the dark. Their location? Near the Tannhäuser Gate.
  • Things you wouldn't believe. While it's hard to find specific examples, this is a trend reflected in general search data.

The bottom line: All those moments will be lost — like tears in rain.

Reflection on vs

Ansible gives that ever-so tempting option to make changes directly on the servers. Things you might justify as minor, unimportant, or urgent. Whatever the reason, you can easily sync the server state with Ansible later, right?

Later: One some unrelated task, all these changes show up in the dry run and are a distraction and drag to deal with.

forces you to make the changes only to the "single source of truth", eliminating this class of issues.

Hi and developers!

I'm currently working on interoperability testing for and , and I need a account to test federation with their implementation.

Since there aren't many open public Bonfire instances available, I was wondering if any Bonfire instance admins out there would be willing to grant me a test account? It would be a huge help for improving interop! Let me know if you can help. Thanks!

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber

hey me, hope you're doing well. out there in the future.

i've been coding in react a lot lately. i think the unified data flow really makes sense in wrangling in this frontend complexity.

i'm a little sad by all the build tooling though. It feels more complicated to scaffold a basic UI now than it was ten years ago. I'm sure ten years from now we'll have some sort of reactivity system without all the complex overhead.

right? right?

now that xbox has a new CEO with a background from facebook and "coreAI", things are looking bleaker than ever for microsoft's line of increasingly rectangularly prismatic consoles.

with a new CEO comes a new outlook (ha ha) on everything, including product names. ms sharma -- can i call you asha? -- i know you're reading this. i know microsoft reads my posts for my ingenious feature ideas. please, please call the next xbox something reasonable. i have two suggestions:

  • Xbox Series X2|S2: this is the safe option. it's the one after the series X|S. hopefully obvious to everyone. 20% of the wii U's failure was because it wasn't called the "wii 2". don't believe me? look at what they called their newest console. unfortunately, this means the one X and one S are the "odd ones out" with their weird naming scheme. you can either accept that and live with it, or...
  • Xbox X3|S3: okay. hear me out.
    • Xbox One: the first "new xbox"
    • Xbox One S & Xbox One X: the revised "new xboxes". 100% compatible with the xbone. call these the X1 and S1.
    • Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S: the second generation of "new xboxes". plays all the non-kinect xbone games. i know this is gonna sound crazy, but retroactively rename these the Xbox X2 and S2!
    • Xbox X3 & S3: the consoles after the X2 and S2. compatible with all S1 and X1 and S2 and X2 games.
