Pleiades: The Seven Sisters Star Cluster

Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as large and clear as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen with the unaided eye even from the depths of a light-polluted city.

Image Credit & Copyright: Kamil Fiedosiuk

With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The featured 18-hour exposure, taken from Bory Tucholskie, Poland covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six of the sister stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight.

RE: mastodon.social/@dansup/116119

I'd rather work a non-fediverse full time job than sell out, despite knowing first hand what poverty feels like.

I could've taken up any one of those VC sharks up on an offer to fund or sell Pixelfed, but I couldn't live with myself if I did.

That being said, I am looking into sustainable long-term ethical monetization to enable me to work full time, and even grow a team, without sacrificing our core tenets of building ethical alternatives.

This means so much to me, I want to keep building...

Popular YouTube creators hold so much power in raising awareness about alternatives to Big Tech platforms.

I felt hope while watching Johnny Harris's latest video "The Internet Didn't Fail. It Was Taken"... which ultimately launched a new initiative: crowdsourced journalism on a site called NewPress.

Looking at screenshots I thought the site was hosted on and thus federated.

Alas it's on SquareSpace and filled with trackers 😭

Who can we get on the Fediverse? Maybe Vanessa Wingårdh?

Every time I see someone saying “Oh no, I missed the CFP deadline”, I can’t help thinking about all those features in Python or Django that were deprecated for years… and then someone is shocked when they finally get removed. 🫠

Weeks of announcements. Years of warnings. Deprecation messages in the logs. And still: surprise. 😅

Maybe warnings and deadlines only become real the day after they expire. 🪄

I owe so much to @nlnet for funding Pixelfed as their first fediverse project back in 2019.

I would've been homeless if it wasn't for them, and expediting my first milestone RFP.

A year ago we exploded and had to scale up, it was expensive, and that is where a large part of our Kickstarter funds were spent.

I'm now looking at dedicated hosting to reduce costs significantly, as it's not sustainable.

I hate to ask, but we could use more support:

pixelfed.org/support-our-proje

We're funded by you ❤️

The Pallas’ cat (Otocolobus manul).

During the day, this fluffy feline sleeps or hides, preferring to hunt under the cover of darkness. This species, which inhabits parts of Central Asia, lives a primarily solitary life and only seeks out company during mating season. A female Pallas’ cat produces a litter of one to six kittens, and by just 5 months old, they disperse to set out on their own.

c.im/@reading_recluse/11611383
