Signal boosting once more! Let's give it up for @jadehopepunkJade who gave this great talk recently 🎉

Neighbourhood-First Software: the open web without expecting everyone to self-host

tv.lumbung.space/w/nzuB248U2LQ

It's fresh off the re-uploaded with consent presses over on @coopcloud@tv.lumbung.space.

This proposal for Neighbourhood-First Software is a wonderful tapestry of ideas, fed by a concrete bottom-up practice of self-organisation.

It weaves threads between @p2panda, , Co-op Cloud and more.

An inspiring and recommended watch 😻

RE: mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra

Bluesky isn't fucking meant to be a "widely distributed network of small independent servers" — it is meant to be a service through which you have a credible exit if things go to shit for your community.

Blacksky saw that some of the moderation decisions by Bluesky weren't working for their community, so they took on the challenge of setting up infrastructure to support their community.

But this isn't something you do on a whim. It's not designed to operate like that. "Decentralization" can mean different things.

I wrote and participated in an interesting thread on different meanings and implications of decentralization, and how each has trade-offs: bsky.app/profile/thisismissem.

Decentralization doesn't need to mean "I run everything myself", that's just a very specific way of looking at decentralization.

But I like Matrix/PGP/MTProto and want it to be better!

Then: Get good.

I literally blog about applied cryptography for free. If you steal the info I've shared and use it to benefit projects I hate, I'll be none the wiser.

But if you do this, please don't fucking tell me about it.

Is Marc Anthony at the party in “Hackers” as an undercover agent, or because he’s a young guy and wants to hang out with cool hackers?

RE: stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/1

There are many great explainers for the fediverse, and they all fit different scenarios.

But the best way to invite someone to the fediverse is to tell them about a specific community that you think they should join.

My latest tool may help you do that.

"Across disciplines, people are building tools, stories, and systems that meet real needs, create shared meaning, and offer continuity in moments of uncertainty.

These efforts don’t always call themselves political, but they shape culture by demonstrating what’s possible and by helping people imagine how life could be organized differently."

RE: mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra

This is just plain wrong. When you operate a smaller service on AT Protocol, you're not needing to process all the Bluesky data, which happens to be most of the network data at present.

Remember: we share resources to share cost.

The fediverse largely doesn't do that, which results in significant costs for individual operators. (Not to mention the incredibly amount of legal liabilities most operators are currently running with)

RE: mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra

Once again, this is only *if* you want to provide a service to 40+ million users. You probably don't want to do that as an individual.

Running a social network is expensive no matter what you do, when you reach a certain scale. In 2024, it cost mastodon €84,000 to operate their servers. In the same period, it cost Hachyderm approximately $20,000 to run.

There's no magic bullet for "social at scale being cheap" besides a tonne of engineering (which in itself is expensive af).

The fediverse largely relies on volunteers to operate infrastructure that is critical to many people's experience on here. It relies on donations to operate, and very frequent admins struggle to meet their expenses, requiring essentially donation begs.

I'm trying something a little different for this week's (a weekly roundup of @bevyBevy Engine's community-approved Rust PRs, with educational gamedev and project management yapping). 27 PRs to peruse over at gist.github.com/alice-i-cecile

1.6M cubes, nested queries, new contributors, bad jokes!
