What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I self-host a lot of stuff. Nearly everything that I use. FOSS and self-hosting is a massive part of my computing experience.

I love reading about people enjoying / exploring self-hosting stuff.

I struggle when people advocate "just self-host it", without giving due consideration to the costs, risks, security considerations, and so on.

I know that I've posted this a few times now, but this discussion seems to pop up quite a lot. So:

Want to get an overview on the current status of the world? Then take a look at world-monitor.app

It's an open source project which provides a freely available OSINT/Intelligence-Dashboard. It's open source and transparent, provided by a community and non profit. No fees, no subscription required.

You can even fetch the sourcecode from github an run it on your own servers. github.com/koala73/worldmonitor

It tracks in real-time active conflict zones + escalation rating, live tracking of military planes, battleships and dark behaviour of ships, nuclear plants worldwide, protests, sanctions and internet outages as well as military bases in nine countries.

The platform uses AI to read more than hundred news sources and to classify threads in realtime.

I think this is something worth taking a look at.

The fair story for is to go beyond the jubilation of only its merits in so many of the "Just Self-host" advice and instruction blogs that are doing the rounds, and also include all the considerations to perhaps not self-host. As it brings a much larger burden than just that initial install. Such that people are even burning out and leave the space, having underestimated what it takes.

you know what really grinds my gears? when people (including ms) call arm64 nt "windows on arm", as that term is meant to refer to armv7 nt, which i'm sure a lot of people would rather forget about, but it still happened

Hey Fedi Friends :fediverse: , I need your help! :blob_help:

The ABC’s (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) latest reporting on the Lesbian Action Group’s federal court bid to exclude transgender women from events, is bigoted, ignorant and one sided.

So despite this direct legal challenge to the rights of trans women, the ABC:

⁃ Failed to interview or even get perspectives from transgender people or advocacy groups.
⁃ Literally uncritically platformed "gender critical" retoric, the article quotes exclusionary and transphobic language calling transgender women “biological males” without criticism or challenge.
⁃ Claimed this is a "clash of rights” when in reality it's a transphobic exclusionary group trying to challenge human rights as defined by the federal Sex Discrimination Act.

Trans women are women. :heart_transgender: Trans lesbians are lesbians. :heart_rainbow: Trans rights are human rights. :blahaj:

We need to send a message to the ABC that this is unacceptable! Please help by lodging a complaint! (anyone can) :heart_transgender: ⬇️

"4. 오늘 하루 저희를 지켜주신 당신의 면발에 감사드리며, 저희가 평화로이 밤을 맞이하게 하소서."

저의 주님, 날아다니는 스파게티 괴물 님,
이 몸을 편히 쉬게 하시고, 우리가 오늘 애써 뿌린 씨가 영원한 열매를 맺게 하소서.

Serious question: as a user (not as a developer!), have you ever seen substantial improvement in a piece of a software from a ground-up rewrite?

In other words, have you ever used (but not co-developed) something where the developer(s) decided on stopping evolutionary work and instead embarked on a substantial rewrite, and the outcome as you saw it firsthand was a real improvement?

If so, please state your example. Please stick to personal experience, rather than hearsay. Thanks!
