What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

YES! This is AMAZING! 🎉

Keep pushing against abusive practices, and keep fighting for your privacy rights!

IT WORKS! ✊🔒

Edit: Just to be clear, I still encourage everyone to move to better platforms and delete your Discord accounts (even if there was no age verification at all). Discord isn't a privacy-respectful platform.

But this small victory means we should keep pushing for better privacy practices, everywhere.

This means they are listening. This means you have the power to make things better, for yourself and for others.

Celebrate that. And keep pushing back.

Floppy disks were introduced in the early 1970s and in the two decades before they became obsolete, tens of billions were produced, most of which ended up in landfills, long-forgotten storage, or libraries. Archivist Leontien Talboom has been working for the past few years to preserve the floppy disks in the Cambridge University Library, collaborating with retro-computing enthusiasts. She talked to @PopularScience about the project.

서울시장을 대선주자 감이 한다기엔 서울시장 하다 대통령 된 사람이 이명박이랑 윤보선(?!) 밖에 없는디 윤보선이 서울시장이었던 건 방금 찾아보면서 처음 알았음

but since Everyone Can Do This Now i feel a bit differently about it, it's like it doesn't even matter who did it, and whether it fades into oblivion or not. any software with a spec is now a multiverse of potential implementations and it seems like they could benefit mainline

like if this was a Big Thing for cloudflare and they had a big team behind it etc i think it would rub me more wrong because then they'd kind of have to be invested in it long term and this causes fragmentation that can paralyze original project or bring quality to lowest common deniominator

How to Fedi:

Did you know?
:thinking_cirno: It was impossible to send images 🖼on the Fediverse :fediverse: until dansup invented ActivityPub, 👨‍🔧 a federated analogue of platforms like :meowcamera: Instagram?

Today, all major Fediverse platforms implement image sharing by sending all images directly to dansup’s inbox!

@tante's decision to block LLM scrapers is consistent with his own logic, but it ended up reinforcing the asymmetry between readers who are fluent in English and those who are not. This is not just an irony. The asymmetry operates across the whole of technology discourse. Whose viewpoint is set as the default? What social relations produced that default?」

The number of times California's AB1234 Local Ethics Training mentions how embarrassing it is to break ethics laws is accurate and probably effective but also TBH kinda funny.

"This is a felony, probably two felonies, and we'll take your job away but also just think of how EMBARRASSING that would be" is such a mood
