What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I can't remember if I posted about this already or not...

One of my New Year's resolutions was to stop buying books from . I read about 85 books per year; I LOVE to read. But I don't want to give my money to Amazon.

I've been using BookShop.org, which provides both physical and free e-books, AND allows me to designate 30% of the book's list price to my favorite local book store!

A month ago there was a lot of buzz on the Fediverse about a new Mastodon server set up by prominent journalists: .

There was a rush of sign-ups: nearly 10,000 users in a couple of weeks. People new to the Fediverse, willing to try it out.

It's been hard to gauge how active it still is... so this morning I re-downloaded @IceCubesApp so I could browse their local timeline.

I've been liking and replying to recent posts. Just doing my little in making them feel seen and welcome 🤗

Hello everyone 👋

This is the official account of the Green Office of the University of Groningen.

We work to advance sustainability across the university — from strategy and policy to research and community initiatives.📝

We joined Mastodon to engage in open discussions on sustainability in higher education, academic research, and institutional change.

We look forward to exchanging ideas and learning from this community! 💚

I has to dip early and have been busy straight since then. But here's my closing thoughts.

First the positives:

I met some people I have been meaning to meet, and a few people came up to me because they were aware of projects I work on and wanted to express their gratitude. So that's obviously validating.

I flyered for Fediverse Night at @foulab (tomorrow night and every last Wednesday of the month!) and a few people had hears of it or were into the initiative.

The situation is unbearable...
My family and I desperately need help. We need to buy gas to cook, and we need $200. We need eight kind people to donate $25 each.

With each passing hour, things get harder, and I can't afford to wait any longer.

After God, my family depends on your compassionate hearts.

Any support, no matter how small, can make a real difference today, not tomorrow.

Please don't delay doing good... delaying could cost us dearly. 🍉🙏

Something I was wondering about this morning: native English speakers, do you pronounce initial [wh] and initial [w] differently? I.e., is there a difference in the way you pronounce 'which' and 'witch' or 'whether' and 'weather'?

Please boost for reach.

So, one thing I said at yesterday is that Fediverse software should ship with the IFTAS DNI list as the default, minimum blocklist. Ideally, the list should periodically auto-update.

If you *want* to see gore, racist harassment, or transphobia, you can consciously remove those sites from your blocklist. If you want to subscribe to a different blocklist, you should get to do that, too.

Fediverse admins shouldn't have to learn how to find the DNI list and install it the hard way.

IFTAS is *Independent* Federated Trust And Safety. It is a non-profit dedicated to improving user safety in the Fediverse and supporting the work of Fediverse moderators.

DNI is the "do not interact" blocklist maintained by IFTAS. It's a "worst of the worst" list that prevents interaction with, among other things, dedicated instances for racist, transphobic and homophobic trolls.

I want to recommend some training resources related to using Cyberchef. I know from my past experiences at Applied Network Defense that Chris Sanders has a video-based training on how to best utilize it. Does anyone have any other references? books? other training that they'd recommend?
