also, frankly, regardless of if the hype and marketing is or isn't total bullshit, slavery LARPing is a bridge too far for me. someone else can have that stain on their soul.

You don't need to prove that these companies have a real product. The burden of proof is on them.

Until then I don't see what I'd get out of it. I'm good at programming, so all I would be doing is sacrificing my own credibility to prop up theirs. Then there's the skill atrophy problem. I worked hard to develop my skills, and I don't see why I should throw that away for nothing. And of course if these products actually worked as they are hyped to, nobody is going to pay me a livable salary to be a bot janitor long term.

and so if we ever get to the point where "ai" actually will "leave me behind", I'll just pick up "drooling into gpt for dummies" or whatever the week before I actually need it.

half the jobs I've had in my career involved working in a programming language that I had learned (or re-learned) in a week prior to the interview, to a degree of competence that I could talk intelligently about non-trivial aspects of the language, and demonstrate non-trivial tasks idiomatically. these languages were C#, Ruby, and C++.
