What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Mastodon

Do you want to know which version of Linux you are running?
`lsb_release -a`

You can also do the following, which works on FreeBSD:
`cat /etc/*os*release`

Finally, there is uname, which will tell you the exact Linux kernel your system booted:
`uname -r`

This command will tell you if you are using a 32 or 64bit Linux kernel:
`getconf LONG_BIT`

This command will tell you if your CPU supports 32 or 64 bit mode (lm == 64 bit mode):
`grep -o -w 'lm' /proc/cpuinfo | sort -u`

A screenshot, showing a set of Linux and Unix commands that is used to get a comprehensive view of a Linux system's identity and architecture, covering:

a) The OS distribution and version (lsb_release -a, cat /etc/*os*release)

b) The running kernel version (uname -r)

c) The system's bit architecture (getconf LONG_BIT, grep 'lm' /proc/cpuinfo)

On the one hand, I appreciate that my phone is smart enough to tell me that based on how I use it, it's safe to only charge up to 80% for longer battery life.

On the other hand, I have a supercomputer in my pocket that I use so little that it's like "naw I definitely don't need 20% of my battery capacity, you're good".

(We'll see how it feels in summer, when recreational biking season starts. I may have it do voice turn by turn cues again.)

Please pardon my reply-guy butting in @thomasfuchsThomas 🔭🕹️. I think maybe that was what software engineering as envisioned by the likes of David Parnas (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_) was supposed to be. Sadly, 50+ years later it's still has barely left academia and safety critical systems.

Something something money, something something too slow, something something move fast and break things.
