What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

chipsandcheese.com/p/arms-cort

I've spoken to two friends now whose (different) employers are trying to monitor which are actively using , as if doing so is some kind of metric for success.

So I wrote an (only slightly tongue-in-cheek) post-commit hook that spoofs the records their AI agents might have made, so management can't tell that they're not drinking the kool-aid.

(Obviously it'd be better if my friends could just openly say "nah, I produce better code without AI", or else have a different job with management that respects them, but until that happens...)

futurism.com/artificial-intell

For the record, this is the IPv4 NAT performance of a Mellanox SN2010. The fact that it only has a single interrupt/queue is the major limiting factor, it's maxing out one of the 4 CPU cores while the other 3 twiddle their thumbs.

(The upload performance is probably also limited by Firefox not being able to send enough.)

IPv6, being hardware line rate switched, of course has none of these problems…

Speedtest.net result showing 4350 Mbps download and 2703 Mbps upload; the provider is Fiber7.iperf result showing 9.25Gbit/sec TX and 8.93Gbit/s RX

I’ve started writing a new blog post about FreeBSD, but I keep getting interrupted every five minutes.

The best time to continue will probably be tomorrow morning, between 6 and 8.

I already know I’ll wake up excited because I have something I love to work on 🙂

It’s hard to understate just how much more productive coding agents are at some tasks in YOLO mode. Essential to have a good sandbox for this, though. My favourite so far is sandvault: no Docker nonsense needed.

So I made some progress today on ChronoTasker, the to-do app that shows your tasks on a clock-like interface. Yes, that's a built-in Pomodoro timer.

Let me know if this is the kind of thing you'd like to have access to. I kind of built it for myself, but if enough people are interested I'll make a version with account logins, etc.

If your key takeaway from this is that the journalist was solely responsible for this mistake and should lose their job, and not that the company's editorial process failed while that company had an employee working to a deadline while sick, then I'm not sure what to tell you except that you're picking a side.

macOS Tahoe is still full of annoyances like this: a notification inside *System Preferences* that cannot be gotten rid of, and it causes the list to look janky, with weird spacing for the list item and a misaligned "2".

I'd be happy with Classic or Aqua over 'Glass'

I guess the "Rewrite in Rust" movement is more about using Rust's popularity as an excuse to create community-approved breaking changes and clean-slate designs. PaX Team added the essential security feature W^X to C in the early 2000s, and guess what, this made a lot of application people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. But if you rewrite a whole system in Rust, nobody says you break their spacebar-CPU-heating workflow that they depend on.
