What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Damn I guess I wasn't even paying attention yesterday so *deep breath* here we go:

- Supreme court issues shadow docket ruling that says teachers MUST tell their parents if their child privately comes out as trans supremecourt.gov/opinions/25pd
- Texas Attorney General declares that therapists who *use gender affirming language* for patients are engaging in child abuse, will have license to practice removed and face criminal charges erininthemorning.com/p/texas-a
- American Society of Plastic Surgeons members blindsighted by the org issuing a statement saying *HRT blockers*, surgery, etc are harmful for youth erininthemorning.com/p/asps-me

We're in this together. Attacks on trans youth are a pathway to attacks on trans adults.

Esotericism in general is more or less a puzzle campaign to keep smart or aspirational (but otherwise average) people invested in religion. It's like the "new game plus" mode of theology. You cared enough about scripture to find the contradictions? Congratulations, you're not like those other church-goers! Put on this apron and join our secret club!

So then the masonic mythos specifically ties "traditional" ideals of social and family structure (patriarchy, more or less) to progressive values like restraining power with law and a secular democracy, promoting individual liberty and diversity, etc.

So it's got all of these juicy cultural hooks for people who would otherwise be white supremacists and it uses that structure to steer them towards a liberal, secular civil society and away from the doomsday cult (evangelicalism).

Which is why it's so interesting to me that modern day US freemasons are frequently MAGA: somewhere along the way they lost the plot and now they're all on team Theocratic Dictatorship

I should add something to this, to make it a more fair assessment.

The FOSS movement as it stands today is inherently unsustainable. A dangerous burnout zone for those seeking income here. See the unbalance in this article:

heise.de/en/news/Harvard-study

If we take out the people having the privilege of time and money, what options does a person who wants to earn their living with Free Software have, roughly speaking?

1. Donations, sponsors, grants.
2. Dabble in FOSS as side-quest to a job.
3. Attempt "regular business practices".

1) isn't really sustainable as is proven time and again, 2) isn't earning a living with FOSS really, and 3) is the only option that is left. We all live under hypercapitalism and here is where our sustenance must come from.

Linux Foundation not only follows 3) but also focuses on 'professional packaging' of FOSS such that corporations are prepared to pay decent prices for it.

Different perspective. But with money, greed creeps in too.

The @IJFmediaThe IJF has found Surrey Speak’s content appears to be largely AI-generated and is laden with factual inaccuracies.

The website also published AI-generated imagery based on real events, including an altered portrait of a murder victim. Zak Vescera reports.

@smallcircles🫧 socialcoding.. your question is a cognitive dissonance for me.

Firstly, I've only ever experienced Google+ circles in an environment where the participants are similar to LinkedIn, posting about professional topics and/or corporate syncophacy. They are a good way to seal yourself into an echo chamber/bubble, even within that type of discourse

Secondly, influencer social media always feels more like people pitching their point of view or hot take or maybe just themselves. It's about collecting follower count for credibility. Fedi mostly isn't like that but there are some.

Lastly, I'm in the US, right now with political situation there is necessarily disruption and shouting and points to be made. (Some of them might even be correct!). But it does affect social media experience; it would probably make matters worse to increase the echo chamber effects.

@shriramkShriram Krishnamurthi

I did some experiments a couple of months ago.

ChatGPT/Codex would produce code that compiled and worked, but absolutely ignored glaring issues.

Claude was insistant that by doing this ornate graph-coloring thing we could get better bounds on computation, ignoring that it had to redo the graph-coloring on every iteration and so the whole thing was accidentally quadratic.

Also lots of just subtle issues, or outright technically-correct-but-truly bizarre decisions.

This started as a post, but ended up a little bit too long for that...

In short, I'm looking for a company (or companies) that could be interested in investing in this vision for the social web. Please spread around.

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

Call to action to cis people: be assholes anytime you get asked for your sex assigned at birth. Write letters, complain to staff, refuse to answer. Make it impossible to collect sex assigned at birth. Be really offended that anyone would ask you. Make enough noise that if trans people want to quietly not answer or give whatever answer feels correct to them, no one will notice.
