"we need to open our eyes to the fact that the current industry many of us work in, not only doesn’t care about their workers, it actively resents them. In their eyes, we have gone from being the people who made things possible, to an unnecessary burden on the bottom line.

They hate that we charge money for our labor, and see that money as something we are stealing from their pockets."

My experience of the :

Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.

Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.

Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with ... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.

Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️

Given the and the urgency to transition to , we’re building up the DemocraticTech.Fund. It is a networked approach, aiming to increase our collective capacity, to discover the tech that is already available to us, to deploy it in ways that we can own it, to share learnings of the transition, to move there together, so we can overcome network effects.

It is our intention to identify together the gaps of what is needed to make the transition, to fund that collectively. This can be tech, media to raise awareness for the positive alternatives already out there, and federating our communities. We’re starting as civil society, and we intent to invite institutions – public and private – to chip in and multiply the contributions. Together we can make the impact that is needed.

At this point we’re coming out of the concept development phase, moving into prototyping. Last week we met in Amsterdam, hosted by the @internetarchiveeurope working together with the @dweb team to prepare together for the in Berlin. This is really exciting, and we’re changing gears! We now have our view at the gathering in Berlin in July, where we’ll be joining some 700 people to rebuild the internet in a decentralised, cooperative solidarity economy basis. This is !

for whoever needs to hear this: you're not alone. i'm not vibecoding any of the software i write. i'm writing it by hand, but i've leveled up my emacs with eglot/lsp. i'm modernizing my stacks and use languages with excellent compilers. i think about how to do more with less. i'm trying to combine the best human-written libraries and modules and assemble them with minimal boilerplate. i enjoy reading your manuals and references. i believe in robust, secure, human-written software.
