What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A few years ago I designed a way to detect bit-flips in Firefox crash reports and last year we deployed an actual memory tester that runs on user machines after the browser crashes. Today I was looking at the data that comes out of these tests and now I'm 100% positive that the heuristic is sound and a lot of the crashes we see are from users with bad memory or similarly flaky hardware. Here's a few numbers to give you an idea of how large the problem is. 🧵 1/5

SIGCSE TS posted a recording of my recent keynote, "Love, Learning, and Computing Education". If you haven't seen it, I hope this live version is a helpful guide for navigating this era of hate, at least in our little world of computing education: youtube.com/watch?v=FVrnZh_w-hY

User interface design can sometimes be more challenging than backend/federation logic.

Take this Loops Starter Kit Admin page for example, I wanted to include as much data as possible, but segmented it accordingly, so we can show the History Timeline by hiding the account list behind a button.

It's beautifully powerful, yet simple. ✨

I'm reading a bunch of Coruna reports after dinner because I am a cool person who knows how to party. Of particular interest: not only does Coruna not work against iOS in lockdown mode, but if it even detects lockdown mode running, it bails. This is why I talk about lockdown mode so damn much.

Yesterday, we launched a new section to support the community in its privacy advocacy effort 💛

The first resource in this section is the Privacy Activist Toolbox ✊🧰
privacyguides.org/activism/too

This isn't an activist privacy checklist. It's a unique resource filled with useful tips to help privacy activists in their advocacy work, both for individuals and organizations! 💪

I've been saying for a while that we need something like FediCon in East Asia. A dedicated conference is still a stretch, but I've been thinking about a smaller step:

@COSCUP 2026 (Taipei, Aug 8–9) is accepting proposals for community tracks. It might be worth trying to open a Social Web track there—something in the spirit of the Social Web devroom at FOSDEM.

Nothing is decided yet, but if you're working on , the , or anything in the social web space and might be interested in speaking (or co-organizing), I'd love to hear from you.

Published some notes on the situation at Qwen - they released the Qwen 3.5 family (an outstanding family of open weight models) but now their lead researcher and several others all appear to have resigned within the past 24 hours simonwillison.net/2026/Mar/4/q
