Good News! 🚨👀

I am delighted to finally announce today what I've been working on in the past few weeks:

Privacy Guides' new Activism section! :awesome:
https://privacyguides.org/activism/

The Activism section offers a new way to empower the digital rights community. It will progressively grow with more tools to support the community in its privacy activism effort, both for individuals and organizations 💛

As Privacy Guides' new Activism & Outreach Lead, I will be working hard on developing this section even further in the coming weeks, adding many more tools to support our community.

I hope this can be a helpful resource for anyone who is ready to fight for privacy rights ✊🔒

You may not need that “AI” voice thing that reads your web pages aloud to users. It comes free in the browser:

• Edge’s Read Aloud (Ctrl + Shift + U),
• Firefox’s and Chrome’s reader mode text-to-speech,
• Safari’s Speech feature.

Stop adding trackers to your sites. Don’t add WCAG risk.

Doc: I’m gonna need you to read between the lines

Me: okay

Doc: insurance typically only covers this lab work for people who have been told they have a vitamin D deficiency

Me: okay

Doc: so, have you ever been told you have a vitamin D deficiency

Me: Funny you should mention it, I have.

진성 사교도들이 주술적으로 세상을 멸망시킬 음모를 꾸미고 있는 게 우리가 현재 살고 있는 현실이라는 사실이 너무 당황스러워서 감정이 정확히 매겨지지조차 않는다.

Polymarket has pulled the bet on a nuclear detonation happening in 2026. There were obv concerns that a platform being used by insider traders would not mix well with a bet encouraging the detonation of a nuke. Polymarket didn't respond to request for comment

AI, green energy inference

I got this setup working at home, to experiment with and help me to talk with colleagues about potential alternatives to Copilot/OpenAI/Anthropic.

It's using Regolo.ai, a 100% green energy inference provider with zero water waste, based in the EU: regolo.ai/the-environmental-im

I'm using their open weight models via OpenCode, which also works inside VS Code.

It doesn't solve all the problems with of course, but it seems preferable to the default Big Tech options. WDYT?

I hope one day to see AI and quantum computing solve the most intractable, complex problem in digital technology, one that has defeated our most powerful programming minds: making web forms that don't care whether you put a space in the postal code.

Welp, there we go bsky.app/profile/why.bsky.team

> Oh interesting, people who don’t know how to build software are getting mad at my post about building software. Cute.

> Let me be clear, over the next year, the job of software engineer will shift dramatically to no longer have typing syntax into an editor as its primary time sink.

Lots of renewed talk about static site generators 'round these parts (which is awesome), so let me do a little shoutout to Pelican getpelican.com @pelican

I chose this over 11ty (which I did try!) because it's written in Python, which is one of the few (the only?) languages I know(ish), and because I'm more comfortable with their upgrade schedule (more like yearly instead of what felt like weekly with 11ty - that just stresses me out - YMMV, of course).

Anyway, it's a great little SSG if the other ones out there don't float your boat. It powers my site at: mitten.lol

Our industry has always been a mess of contradictions, because people are a mess of contradictions.

The following sounds like open mic humour, but it's a real part of our history: There was a moment in time when recursion was considered an advanced thing to be avoided as "too complicated,' while we simultaneously required new hires to have a degree in Computer Science.

I used to ask, “Which is it? Are we educated professionals who know how to use our tools? Or not?”

RE: hear-me.social/@Lacze/11593625

The "brilliant" minds behind the new social network wsocial.eu forgot to grab related domain names, so I applaud the efforts of the creator of w-social.eu... encouraging people to be social and simply join the fediverse.

Fun fact: yesterday I almost registered wsocial.lol (1 Euro for the first year) and wsocial.wtf.

I guess if I see an article in mainstream media about wsocial.eu I may do it (if the domains are still available).

Journos, you should cover the fediverse!

I was this close to registering a domain name & creating a splash page to expose why wsocial.eu is such a terrible idea.

Why did I stop?

I have a big hunch that their initiative is going to FLOP. Big time.

A fork of Bluesky that requires government ID to post? Bahahahahaha.

Sure you can have rich and powerful friends helping you launch at Davos but getting people excited about a new social network isn't easy.

I will use my limited time in propping up the fediverse instead ✊

Monica Vargas de @GRAIN in conversation with journalist Gina Rigols about vs
-> and corporations intimately working together to "help" transforming farmers being more productive based on pesticides, tech platforms, privatisation of natural knowledge
-> they increasingly know and control what we eat
-> otoh, we are what we eat
-> 70% of global population is active in farming
-> what kinds of resistance are farmers waging against this?
--> resistance against int'l trade agreements (that facilitate this bigtech bigagro privatisation of code and data)
--> collective seed banks where communities keep seeds, share knowledge
-> also fight tax paradises, that help keep this status quo

Do you know an organisation (big or small) that might be interested in joining Mastodon and the wider Fediverse? Here's a guide that tries to answer questions they might have about it:

➡️ fedi.tips/tips-for-organisatio

If any organisations want to ask further questions or want help joining, please let me know!

I've tried to cover all the basics in relation to organisations, let me know if I've missed something or if you have other feedback 🙂

RE: hci.social/@amyjko/11617174953

This keynote by @amyjko reminds us educators (in computer science and beyond) of our mission while also offering perspectives to guide and expand it.

To my dismay I have to postpone watching it in full until I can set aside an hour (plus likely some time to digest), but after skimming through the video I feel comfortable sharing and recommending it.
