What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My personal request: if you see a headline that makes you feel a strong emotion, you should think about whether it’s actual for at least 20 seconds before boosting or typing out your opinion

It's simplistic to replace "user" with "person" in technical discussions. Not every person described in a technical document is an end user; some are administrators, developers, designers, data objects, or other kinds of people. "User" is a role in technical systems, not a derogatory term, and we shouldn't treat it as such.

The cat is out of the box: @matrixThe Matrix.org Foundation is looking for a new Thib!

If you think you can be a good fit for the role, please send me an email explaining why and attach your CV.

If you tick most of the boxes but not all, please reach out nonetheless. It’s a tall order, but we have fantastic volunteers and a great handbook to help you settle into the role.

@evanEvan Prodromou My answer is a "No" without a but. Any form of classification or algorithmic unpacking reflects intent. Intent with bias. That cannot be seen or changed. No matter how much we try. That's at least my lesson based on many years of experience. And yes, I am fully aware that my personal timeline also reflects a lot of bias based on the people I follow. But that is ultimately a good thing in a world of disinformation and clickbait.

@jwildeboerJan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange: What if the bias is on the users' part?

For example, if I create a list in Mastodon with the accounts of my close friends, that is an attempt on my part to stay better connected to those people and not lose their updates in the flow of the hundreds of other accounts I follow.

This is biased -- it assumes that a clearer view of my friends' posts will improve our relationships, and it also assumes that I know who my real friends are. But that's up to me to decide.

RE: writing.exchange/@ernie/116172

so Apple is selling the MacNeo with specs similar to the Dell Inspiron with soldered 8GB of RAM of 10 YEARS AGO?

why drop $600 on a laptop when you can get a used Dell laptop for 50 bucks at a Goodwill store?

oh, the keyboard is backlit, has more ports and the display is a touchscreen.

i know, cuz i use one for the “smart tv” i dumbed down on purpose to avoid the fuckery of Roku’s & TCL’s spyware.

A ground up rewrite of a project transitively used by millions would be extremely concerning even without AI usage.

It raises serious questions of stewardship and the responsibility of project maintainers to not create unnecessary churn for downstream consumers.

Maybe this instance will be ~fine.

Maybe other projects get used to doing python3/vue3 level backwards compatibility breaks every few releases.

If you should ever find yourself with a lower leg injury that requires you to be non-weightbearing, try to get your hands on an iWALK knee crutch. It's an amazing piece of technology. Being able to walk around while still having the use of both hands (unlike crutches or a knee scooter) is so helpful. I can make a cup of coffee and carry it to the couch.

I'm back to thinking about CSRF: why is it useful for sites to be able to embed resources (like <img src="othersite.com/whatever.jpg">) and for the browser to send the user's cookies to the third-party site?

There's "ads" and "tracking" obviously but I feel like there's another actually-useful-to-users reason I'm not thinking of

It's me, the person who Causes Discourse but is Reasonably Nice About It but not everyone else involved is as careful with language and maybe not everyone else should or needs to be but ultimately the people involved aren't sure whether to be mad at her or mad at the people reading what she says or maybe this whole thing is in her head

As for the nation’s literature, Brandeis may have been the first .. to refer to the Constitution as a “living organism, capable of growth and adaptation.”

“This approach allows the fresh context of the present to perform alchemy with the wisdom of the past, to offer new ways to make the law and faith relevant and responsive to present conditions,” he said. “Prophetic witness cannot set its gaze backward on a frozen history with an unrecognizable context. Instead, it faces forward, informed by the past, yet determined to bring back vision into the world in the present age.”

This no longer works, unfortunately.. how does the constitution change when it is effectively impossible to amend due to Constitutional Calcification .. only "interpret" through a ridiculously gerrymandered (thanks Mitch M) SCOTUS? infosec.exchange/@codinghorror

"Archi, a Daghestanian language traditionally assigned to Lezgian group, has an amazingly rich system of inflectional morphology. The mere size of verbal paradigm strains credibility: grammar description calculates that a verb has in principle 1,502,839 forms (Kibrik et al, 1977)."
