What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

idk i find the assumptions pretty annoying here. (to be clear i don’t work at bsky anymore but) do you think people there are amateurs. quite a few have 20+ years of experience writing code by hand. talking to them like they’re clueless as engineers is just wishful thinking projection

Step 1: Convince geeks that copyleft is "against entrepreneurship"

Step 2: Convince geeks that all the GPL-licensed FLOSS foundational software should be rewritten using MIT/BSD license

Step 3: Provide a proprietary tool trained on GPL software which "rewrrite" the same software but without the license.

–––We are there, we can still move away from that path–––

..
...

Last step: congratulations, you have killed the last remains of independence in the software world

I just attended the yearly ASF Members meeting and made official my votes in the foundations business.

I’m so happy to be able to have a voice in how the foundation conducts itself and in turn how it impacts its projects, which are large swaths of the FOSS ecosystem.

Even though I don’t agree with everyone at the foundation, since joining in 2008 I have seen it move in the right (as per me) direction, albeit slower than I would want on some issues.

Like Linux or Wikipedia, @TheASFApache - TheASF is one of the things that make no sense on paper and yet defies expectations year after year. And I’m happy to do my part.

TIL: There is a "TED AI"
(in Vienna! on the weekend of the The Austrian National Day)

Yeah, that figures.

I assume these are AI generated talks, performed by humans no one listens too, as everyone just consumes the AI generated summary.

Can we create and use social networking algorithms on the Fediverse that serve our own personal goals, such as more and deeper personal relationships, career advancement, and more participative citizenship?

Hey, everyone. Thanks for replying. I would say yes, but I expect a high level of choice (I choose the goals, not someone else), transparency (I know how it works, at least at a high level), and control (I can turn it on and off, I can configure or modify it). I think these have become pretty common principles for Fediverse software in general, so I think that would be likely outcomes.

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber

> Their claim that it is a "complete rewrite" is irrelevant, since they had ample exposure to the originally licensed code (i.e. this is not a "clean room" implementation). Adding a fancy code generator into the mix does not somehow grant them any additional rights.

The human didn't write the code, the LLM did. "They" which had "ample exposure to the originally licensed code" does not exist; "they" are ephemeral.

1. Start a fresh session / clean context, make it meticulously document the architecture, APIs, etc

2. keep those documents, throw away the code, start a new session with an LLM that has clean context and tell it to build off those documents.

That's clean room. If the original code was not in the LLM's context, it's not violating the license.

This is how you can do this. Proving beyond a reasonable doubt he didn't do it this way is going to require a lot of evidence nobody will have.

Why should owning your compute on-prem mean giving up the cloud computing experience? Our CEO Steve Tuck sat down with theCUBE at the NYSE to talk about what happens when you design hardware and software together and why enterprises shouldn't have to choose between control and capability.
