What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: mastodon.social/@Gargron/11617

@evanEvan Prodromou
I see more potential in algorithmic dicoverability of interesting accounts and posts, but with all the controls and protections you mention. Regarding friends, if you spend the time tagging accounts to weight the algorithm for a friendship heavy feed, how long will it take to become more useful than an existing personal Mastodon list of friends? Might it not be more work to toggle the algorithm on and off to turn your friend weighted feed to a professional interest weighted feed?

New account/instance, new

I'm Lindy (they/them), a lover currently living in the mid-Atlantic region of the US. I hike frequently and love sharing photographs of the wondrous things I see when outdoors. made me fall in love with being alive, and I’d love to pass that feeling onto others! are my jam.

I’m a worker and aspiring Archivist starting my (Library Master’s) in the fall. I’ve worked in public libraries, academic libraries, and special collections and archives. I feel super passionate about lifelong learning and peoples’ access to information. I will probably gush about Libraries from time to time here.

I’m also an artist. I love taking materials and making a finished piece from them. I try to use reclaimed or recycled materials in my art as much as possible. In the past few years, I’ve gotten really into making art. It’s the first time I’ve ever really stuck to a medium long-term, and I’m enjoying seeing my skills grow project by project.

Pics are of me on the beach in Hawaii last September and of my beloved cat, Doodle Noodle. She’s my darling-est dear and my best friend!

A photo of me standing on the rocky coast of a beach on Oahu Island in Hawaii. I'm standing on large black igneous rocks, with more large rocks behind me. It's a beautiful sunny day, with a few small clouds in the sky. I'm wearing a bathing suit and black shorts with a red kimono style wrap and sandals. My arms are high up in the air! I took this photo as the tide was coming in, and it took multiple tries as me and my camera kept getting splashed with large waves!A photo of a large fluffy brown tabby cat with beautiful green eyes sitting in a dining room chair. She's posing for the camera, which she does often (she loves being the center of attention).

like i get that there’s a large group of people on this website who want to be mad about ai usage and that Why invites it by taunting them but this idea that he’s some rando slinging unreviewed slop into the codebase is kind of ridiculous

idk i find the assumptions pretty annoying here. (to be clear i don’t work at bsky anymore but) do you think people there are amateurs. quite a few have 20+ years of experience writing code by hand. talking to them like they’re clueless as engineers is just wishful thinking projection

I wrote about the House hearing today, how Congress is trying to strip anonymity from the Internet, and the devastating effects that has for journalists, whistleblowers, LGBTQ ppl, immigrants, civil rights activists, abortion providers and anyone challenging power for @theintercept theintercept.com/2026/03/05/ko

Step 1: Convince geeks that copyleft is "against entrepreneurship"

Step 2: Convince geeks that all the GPL-licensed FLOSS foundational software should be rewritten using MIT/BSD license

Step 3: Provide a proprietary tool trained on GPL software which "rewrrite" the same software but without the license.

–––We are there, we can still move away from that path–––

..
...

Last step: congratulations, you have killed the last remains of independence in the software world

Where are the kind hearts? Where are the generous people? 💔
I am from Gaza, living this suffering every day. After my foot was injured in an attack, my body has become very weak and I am still bleeding. I urgently need treatment.
I’m not asking for much… $50 for vitamins, food, and medicine could help protect my health and give my wife and me a chance to survive.
🙏 Please don’t ignore this message. Your support today could save my life.

I just attended the yearly ASF Members meeting and made official my votes in the foundations business.

I’m so happy to be able to have a voice in how the foundation conducts itself and in turn how it impacts its projects, which are large swaths of the FOSS ecosystem.

Even though I don’t agree with everyone at the foundation, since joining in 2008 I have seen it move in the right (as per me) direction, albeit slower than I would want on some issues.

Like Linux or Wikipedia, @TheASFApache - TheASF is one of the things that make no sense on paper and yet defies expectations year after year. And I’m happy to do my part.
