This is what I mean when I say the Fediverse is centralized around Mastodon. The number of calls I hop on where people say, "Yeah, but I need it to function with the Mastodon API first," is a problem.

The Atmosphere has a similar Bluesky-ification issue as well. We all need to do better here, and I wish the biggest platforms on both sides would take the lead on this if they care about the broader ecosystem.

Take action! What’s the problem? The Government has proposed amendments to the Children Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would give Ministers the power to restrict access to "internet services". This is supposed to give the Government the power to ban under 16s from social media but “internet services" is a very broad definition, which means any online platform can be included. The wording of the amendment means they could do this without even having to prove that these sites are harmful for children.

Hi from Rhode Island!

Artist, gardener, and quiet observer of the small world in my backyard.

You’ll usually find me near the feeders or in the garden watching the neighborhood wildlife. Chickadees supervise, the crows recognize me, and in summer
the bees take over the flowers.

I grow vegetables, paint some of the birds I see, and share the little moments happening right outside my door.

So, I've been seeing news about all of the age verification laws, and I see a LOT of scared people.

Here's the way I see it, and I'd like to honestly get people's opinion, I think they're dumb, HOWEVER, I think the laws give ud a HUGE opportunity. YOU can run your own platform and you can verify your own age. Same with your family, same with your community. This gives us power.

Are people just going to hand over their IDs to Facebook? Probably, but it won't be me. And there will be massive fraud and issues and this will force legal degradation of centralized platforms.
