Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

TIL that

cargo —locked {build,test}

works like

cargo {build,test} —locked

But

cargo —locked clippy

works like:

cargo clippy

That is, the `—locked` is ignored, but the command still “works.” This is the case for any command not built into Cargo, it seems. So make sure you put that flag in the right place.

(TIL, but I’m pretty sure I’ve learned it multiple times.)

Has anyone made a good guide for how to ask for survival money on the fediverse yet? One that outlines how tagging strangers isn't a good long term strategy. That it can temporarily work for engagement but sooner or later you will either loose your account or get blocked so much that you don't have much reach. There is this influx of people trying to crowd fund for their survival coming here and we should help provide them with the means to continue to do so sustainability.

A few years ago I designed a way to detect bit-flips in Firefox crash reports and last year we deployed an actual memory tester that runs on user machines after the browser crashes. Today I was looking at the data that comes out of these tests and now I'm 100% positive that the heuristic is sound and a lot of the crashes we see are from users with bad memory or similarly flaky hardware. This is what I mean when I say the Fediverse is centralized around Mastodon. The number of calls I hop on where people say, "Yeah, but I need it to function with the Mastodon API first," is a problem.

The Atmosphere has a similar Bluesky-ification issue as well. We all need to do better here, and I wish the biggest platforms on both sides would take the lead on this if they care about the broader ecosystem.

Take action! What’s the problem? The Government has proposed amendments to the Children Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would give Ministers the power to restrict access to "internet services". This is supposed to give the Government the power to ban under 16s from social media but “internet services" is a very broad definition, which means any online platform can be included. The wording of the amendment means they could do this without even having to prove that these sites are harmful for children.
