What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Digital ID checkpoints could erupt across the Internet 🆔

The UK government is seeking a power grab. And it's not just social media.

Every adult will have to do ID checks to access whatever online services the government – any government – decides to restrict or curfew.

Been trying to figure out how to make cooking dinner and recipe management make more sense lately, and I think I've landed on Mealie as the answer. Oh, and thieving recipes from Gousto*

In theory it'll allow me to have a database of recipes and the ability to select a bunch of meals, the ingredients of which I can then export in a shopping list.

I've got it installed on my home server, accessible within the network, so anyone else can add recipes and request them.

Fuck this fucking timeline. How is this even a thing that needs to be considered? Fuck tech bros with the dirtiest volleyballs possible.

The state Senate unanimously passed legislation Wednesday that prohibits employers from requesting, requiring or encouraging employees to have microchips implanted in their bodies. The bill previously passed the House of Representatives on an 87-6 vote last month. It now heads to the governor’s desk for final approval.

이해가 안되는게, 미국이 지금 하고 있는건 의회의 승인을 받지않고 진행되는 군사 작전이잖아? 전쟁이 아니잖아? 그런데 왜 무조건 항복을 요구하는거지?

@promoviczprom™️ @laurenshof @evanEvan Prodromou It does worry me though, and there's a reason it's so personal to me. The lack of signing of messages and content-addressing have lead to serious issues that, while ATproto does worse than us on the aspects of power distribution, it does better in terms of content survivability and portability, and these are things I thought were important *all the way back in ActivityPub standardization*, but we couldn't get to yet.

There is no "technical problems vs social problems" dichotomy. Social situations influence technical design, and technical design informs the kinds of social systems that are possible. Protocol development is all of this, mass multiplied.

@promoviczprom™️ @laurenshof @evanEvan Prodromou And for whatever it's worth, I think there are solutions to these things. EITHER ActivityPub or ATproto could incorporate the good ideas of the other and solve the parts the other lack.

And I can write down to do it. And I have, scattered across bits and pieces.

But it requires getting ecosystems to move, and it's very depressing trying to do that. I don't have the time in my life to sit through meetings trying to convince them that they need to solve the problem right now. So I just focus on building the directions I think matter.

I could write it all down though, and let everyone else do the fighting to make it happen, I suppose.

But I don't have power over the ATproto or ActivityPub worlds, really. The implementers of both do, and both have huge stakes and biases towards their own things, and investments in the directions they already are convinced they should go. I have a say, and an ability to critique, and people listen to me, but only sort of.
