5chの騒動について色々思った。私はレジストラやドメインというものに、ある種の希望を持っていた。インターネットを使うアプリケーションはドメインを鍵にして多くの情報を紐付ける。だからDNSを紐付けるドメインを発行するレジストラには、その下のサービスの信頼性を運命づける大きな役割がある。そこが特定の考えでアカウントの剥奪を行うというのは、いくらそれが社会的な悪とはいえ、法的な手続きなしにやってしまってもいいものだろうか？これはインターネットをささえる「ドメイン」自体の信頼に傷をつけているように見えてならない。

nostrのリレーサーバ立ててみた。ドメインを信頼のヒントとするインターネットが長年培ってきたものが、今壊れ始めている気がしたから。nostrはドメインに依存しないからね。

Started to get back into Erlang yesterday, to to build a little something with MQTT. I had fun, but making stuff OTP-compatible was tough for me. The docs are there, but they are *dense*. Still wrapping my head around a lot of things.

What are good resources for learning how to build IoT-adjacent services with Erlang/OTP?

5ch.netの件できになるのは、レジストラは5ch.netとbbspink.netのドメイン移管を拒否している点。つまりレジストラがドメインを乗っ取っている状態にある。こうすれば確かに「有害な」コンテンツをブロックすることができるが、はたしてそれをレジストラが行う権利があるのか疑問だ。

2017年に開始したムトーという無料マストドンホスティングサービスがあった。サーバとしてNTTのクラウドサービスを利用していたが、金曜日の夜に突如ダウン、ムトーの一部ユーザのコンテンツを理由にサーバアカウントを停止した。その影響でムトー利用者全員のマストドンが停止。たしか数週間停止してたきがする。この事件でクラウドのヤバさを思い知った。

Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution gives Congress
– not the president
– the power to declare war.

The War Powers Act allows the president to send the military into “hostilities” only after Congress authorizes it
or there’s “a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.”

Neither happened here.

The United Nations Charter bans offensive warfare but allows for self-defense.

The Trump regime pretended it acted defensively when it joined Israel in killing Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and scores of schoolgirls in attacks that also led to at least four American deaths.

No matter what Trump says,
this was a war of choice,
illegal under the UN charter.

British Defense Secretary John Healey said it was
up to “the U.S. to set out the legal basis of the action that it took.”

But the Trump regime only occasionally feels the need to explain itself.

Laws have become quaint relics.

Citizens sue over the law,
judges rule on the law,
and fascists ignore the law.

The other two branches of government have largely surrendered
– the GOP-run Congress by not asserting its authority
and the Supreme Court by giving the president criminal immunity for “official acts.”

Trump has long thought himself to be above all laws,
even on matters of life and death.

He made that clear a decade ago when he said,
“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody,
and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”

In 2020, he declared, “When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total.
And that’s the way it’s got to be.
It’s total.”

Obviously, he hasn’t reconsidered that view.

lol the nuances I find when developing for activitypub ...

I found out #mastodon resolve the ids of the create activities , e.g. https://mastodon.ie/users/IanOB/statuses/116185301517466965/activity

but #pixelfed does not (e.g https://pixelfed.social/p/mahop/935715884483618042/activity) and these are the actual ids that come in the object.

What is more interesting is that you can actually announce create activities, and mastodon fallback to actually "boosting" but not notifying the creator as boosted. Other people would see it properly.

So Amazon are now using Persona for ID checks too on buyers - my 18-year-old daughter has just lost a gift voucher because having let her add it to her account, they promptly cancelled an order she placed using the gift balance and are demanding she upload digital ID. Attempts to fix this over the phone have failed and long story short, the money she was given appears to be lost unless she's prepared to hand Persona her details.

@Em0nM4stodonEm Missing: language and discussion about consent and its role in privacy and rights, digital or otherwise.

Privacy should be a default with any exception requiring affirmative consent. There should be no need to block cookies just as there should be no need to tell businesses not to peer into one's home windows *without consent*.

I find consent to be discussed too infrequently went it comes to rights -- we have the right to say no and exceptions should be extremely obvious.

Great article about the kinds of mental load involved, for women, in domestic labour.

Sadly, this is old news.

Twenty years ago I completed a PhD thesis that unpacked & examined these aspects of domestic life.

By interviewing parents & kids separately, asking the same open ended questions - ‘what gets done, who does what, is it fair, & how do you think it should be?’, which I ran through 3 times, first for domestic tasks, then for the work of identifying what needs to be done & making sure it happens, then for noticing how everyone is feeling & keeping every happy in the process - then taking the family as my unit of analysis, I showed that men & kids were unaware of much of the physical & almost all of the intangible work women did in their homes. Boys & men thought everything was fine. Girls did not want to assume, as adults, the domestic servant role they saw their mothers placed in but had no strategies to achieve this beyond ‘I’ll just tell them’.

There was a hierarchy of work in these families in which men’s work & leisure time had highest priority, then kids’ schooling & leisure, then domestic work of all kinds. Womens paid work & leisure was lowest priority of all.

The families that lived without conflict were those in which the hierarchy of work was not disputed. Where women sought to disrupt the hierarchy there was conflict - which became another part of the domestic load she was expected to manage.

My findings showed that contrary to popular narratives of ‘progress’, this dynamic was not likely to change until men as well as women recognise the dynamic & choose to shift it.

This argument was not popular.

Twenty years later, here we are.

I wish I had been wrong.
