i just don't understand how to use this thing i'm not running Tap continuously. i'm developing locally. obviously it's not running when i'm not developing. obviously i don't need it to "catch up" on "91 million events" when it only monitors a single account. i'm fine having it resync it if needed

There's your problem. Tap is ~56 hours behind the firehose head. It's processing events from ~2
days ago. Your edits are at the head of the firehose, so tap won't see them for a very long time at
its current processing rate of ~455 events/sec.

The firehose has ~91 million events queued up ahead of tap's cursor. At this rate it would take
over 2 days to catch up (and it never will since new events keep coming).

  Options:
  1. Delete tap.db and restart — fresh start, tap will enumerate repos via the signal collection and
resync from scratch, then start consuming the firehose from the current head
  2. Manually advance the cursor — jump tap's cursor close to the head, then let the resyncer handle
the repos that are out of date

Want me to do option 1 (nuke and restart)?

uspol, extreme violence, holocaust, genocide, genuinely horrifying

the US department of homeland security is paying the navy 55 billion dollars to construct a network of detention centres across the USA. they outline building tent cities with a capacity of 10,000 people, as well as “biohazard incinerators” under the “medical and death” section of the contract.

they’re planning for people to die. they’re going to burn the bodies. tens of thousands of them.

THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY HOLOCAUST!
i am horrified beyond belief right now

Any personal recommendations (not search results please) from UK folks for a small UPS to cover our ONT, router, switches and a WIFI access point?

Ideally something fairly compact, I don't want it to be rackmount.

If it could do a few hours at something like 60-70W, that'd be fine.

🚨 OpenAI's head of Robotics resigned because the company is building lethal AI weapons with NO human input required.

> Read that again. Lethal. Autonomy. Without. Human. Authorization.

> The person who built the robots is saying she quit because there are no guardrails on who they kill.

This is the same company that won't let ChatGPT say a swear word.

They put safety filters on your prompts but none on their kill chain.

I resigned from OpenAI. I care deeply about the Robotics team and the work we built together. This wasn’t an easy call. AI has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got. This was about principle, not people. I have deep respect for Sam and the team, and I’m proud of what we built together.

someone told me about a book called surrounded by idiots by thomas erikson. title was super relatable so i checked it out. there’s a lot of stuff about different kinds of people and ways in which we’re different. key take away for me though is: yes, you are surrounded by idiots. (author wouldn’t agree with this though)

A dark image. The background is unclear and blurry. On the foreground on the left there is a huge circle, inside of which a profile picture belonging to @NorcalGma2@sfba.social. On the other side, a bit lower in the frame we see a fediverse logo, but on fire. This is the logo of the Fireside Fedi show. In between those two elements a text is written. This text says:

“Once the site of an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II, Camp East Montana is made up of six long tents at the Fort Bliss Army base outside of El Paso”

“the facility holds around 3,000 detainees who are living in harsh conditions: They lack sufficient food and often go without proper medical care, according to AP’s review of 130 calls made to 911. Those calls took place in just about five months—from when the tents were quickly constructed”

I really love the mastodon.social server, but I do not understand why polls are limited to four options.

If I wanted to ask which German state do you love the most (16 options), or which member of Trump's cabinet will be fired next (26 options), why would the server then want to prevent this poll by limiting the choices to four options?

I really dislike this limitation.

Imagine the optics of letting go of everyone and your last remaining person working on critical infra goes on LinkedIn to say they had to talk to leadership and let them know why he can’t do his job without the people they let go, so they decide to re-hire these people

Imagine talking to people before you let go of everyone

The optics of talking about this so publicly also points to there being no trust of Block’s leadership by people who remain. I hope everyone who gets re-hired asks for at least 100% more money

Screenshot of an engineer at block saying he was the last remaining person working on critical infra for square and weebly and how he had to beg leadership to rehire some people
