What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I saw @evanEvan Prodromou post about Inkwell. Basically, it's a way to monetise your Fediverse presence, although I suspect the project devs will say that's not the main objective.

I've opened a 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘣𝘪𝘦 account $5 a month if you want all the whistles and bells.

I would say @andyc would love this.

@steevc it reminds me of

I'll have a play, but my first allegiance will always be to mastodon.org.uk, it's been more than generous to me.

This is a text section titled "VII Earning From Your Writing" from Inkwell. It states: "Inkwell offers several ways for writers to earn from their work, all available to Plus members with Stripe Connect enabled: • Paid subscriptions — create a monthly plan and publish entries that only your subscribers can read. You keep 92% of every subscription; Inkwell takes 8% to keep the platform running. • Postage — readers can send you one-time payments as a thank-you for your writing, right from your profile or any entry. • Newsletter — build an email subscriber list and send your published entries directly to readers’ inboxes. To get started, visit Settings → Support to connect your Stripe account, then create your subscription plan in Settings → Subscriptions. Learn more on the For Writers page."

Some of you have kindly pointed me at a talk the former XR organizer Gail Bradbrook is giving in London next week, with the title “Lifehouse.”

For the prevention of any confusion, I need to point out that, while I’ve never staked any claim to ownership over the name or the concept, Gail’s use of the term doesn’t reflect my own understanding of what is involved in the organization of Lifehouses. This talk and the effort it describes are her own thing — I wish her luck, but I have nothing to do with it.

You can get a pretty good idea of what my understanding *is* from this:

Thanks for sharing the article! This shows clearly how vulnerable we are when it comes to payment systems or comms overall. If you take away access to such infrastructures from someone, they are immediately excluded from the most basic services. Many people still don't realize this is even possible. That's exactly why it is so important to build alternatives and make people aware that they still have a choice. It's all about using this time window.

another thing missing is some kind of retro analysis. like what kicks an engineer into “okay we’ve had four different bugs with this modal management code, i think our abstraction is wrong and requires a redesign”. it’s not just memory but also a sense of “this seems fragile”
