What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My job role has changed, making me no longer sponsored full time for undirected Rust development. Almost 5 years is a good run and I appreciate what my company has allowed me to do in that time and for still providing me a role at the conclusion of that run.

I will be needing to scale back my role on the Cargo team and the maintenance of my crates. What this will look like exactly? I'm not sure yet. Obvious answers are that I will no longer be writing the This Development in Cargo blog series and giving micro-reports here on where my time is going.

Something that will help is that a focus of mine for Cargo and my crates was to streamline maintenance.

Current status: hoping very much that disabling AppArmor in the kernel doesn't still have terrible bugs like it did early in the life of Ubuntu 22.04, when it gave you charming and fatal kernel memory leaks.

Because guess what we just did on all of our user-accessible machines (in an emergency immediate reboot, I'm sure people are happy about that one).

RE: cosocial.ca/@evan/115580076628

This was posted 4 months ago, i.e. forever in LLM time. I would really like to see a fully-worked through analysis of the actual GHG cost of in general and for coding applications specifically. Including, obviously, training, data centre infrastructure, silicon fabrication, etc.

The reason: I have trouble reconciling these numbers with the insane volumes of investment capital going into the space.

Oooh, a prior oil crisis is what turned the Netherlands from a driving country to a bicycling country.

The Guardian: Do we want to keep fixing the same issue? Unlearned lessons from the first big oil crisis

As energy prices tripled in the 1970s due to Middle Eastern wars, Scandinavia, France and the Netherlands sped up green transition

Dutch cycle lanes

“Holland saddle-sore but fume free” was how Guardian editors headlined an article in November 1973 after oil price spikes led the Dutch government to ban cars on Sundays. The three-month measure was followed by a number of structural steps – from segregated cycle lanes to designing people-friendly cities – that got people on their bikes and out of vehicles that chugged foreign fuels.

“The decision of not using cars on Sundays made it clear that societies could do without them for one day,” said Jan Wittenberg, the first chair of the Dutch Cyclists’ Union, which was founded 50 years ago. “And it looked fantastic. There were picnics on motorways and kids playing in the street.”

@dansup

This is a shit take. Yeah, privacy as implemented in AP relies on a system of trust, with the assumption that the majority of players are acting in good faith, but sit down for this zinger: so does literally the rest of the infrastructure of the modern net.

If your argument were about the security of end-to-end comms where integrity and secrecy have to be verifiable, at least this would be a relevant perspective.

Who the hell are you to decide what the 'point' is, casually trodding on agency because it's inconvenient to you.

What if the real impact of balcony solar will be all the political strength training that results from solar user vs. HOA drama?

A fraction of the people who end up having to "get political" to resolve some issue close to home tend to stay political
