As #FOSS dev one starts a project based on ones own self-interested motives. We had needs to be satisfied, and addressing them is the reward, the return value. We cannot *expect* that to just flow to us, must assure it instead. Only where expectations are mutual can we count on them. Actual commitments underpin and drive collaborative arrangements.

근데 진짜 유럽 자물쇠?는 되게 요상하더라 막 두 바퀴씩 돌아가고 어디서 빼는지도 모르겠고 그럼... 한국 자물쇠는 한바퀴면 많이 돌리고 보통 반 바퀴면 열리고 잠기고 그러면 바로 키 뺄 수 있고 하지 않나 사실 요즘은 애초에 다 디지털 도어락이니까 열쇠 찾아보기도 힘듦

그러나 당시의 현실은 그들의 이상을 따라잡지 못했다. 아무리 인터넷이 일반인들에게 어느 정도 보급된다 한들 56K 모뎀이나 케이블 인터넷, ISDN이 주로 보급되었고 ADSL 같은 고속 인터넷망은 보급이 잘 안 되어 있어서 일반인들이 쉽게 이용하기 힘들었기 때문이었다.
사람들은 장밋빛 미래와 웹이니까 무언가 더 좋겠지라고 기대했지만 인터넷 사용 인구의 대다수가 저속 인터넷을 써야 했던 환경 때문에 웹 서비스는 느리고 불편하기 짝이 없었고 이는 웹 서비스에 대한 불신감과 반감을 키웠다. 1995년부터 2000년까지 나스닥 종합지수는 400% 상승했지만 이후 버블이 꺼지면서 2001년에는 시장이 붕괴되었고 그로 인해 투자자들은 무려 5조 달러의 손실을 입었다. 닷컴기업(Dot-com company)들도 줄줄이 쓰러졌는데 웹밴(Webvan, 1999~2001)이나 빈즈닷컴(beenz.com, 1998~2001) 등이 그 예시다.
