What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

At the time of writing, there were five political parties between 10-25% in a Westminster voting intention poll. FPTP is dead; and if Starmer doesn't want to be the one responsible for Reform getting >50% of MPs with <30% of votes, he has to call a referendum on PR voting.

Any journalists want to write an article about all the environmental costs of the more than 10,000 Starlinks that are now in orbit? All I'm seeing are breathless articles mindlessly worshiping That Awful Billionaire for crossing the 10,000 satellite mark.

Every single one of those will come down in an uncontrolled reentry. That's a lot of metal in the atmosphere, and a lot of dice-rolling to see if any more pieces will make it to the ground.

SpaceX is truly awful.

Trump, the big man, reduced to begging the allies he’s been shitting on for the last year to help him out with his Epstein War.

Australia can send AUKUS submarines, when they’re ready.

Everyone else can wait until Trump’s tariffs are removed, and until he ceases threatening to annex Canada and Greenland, and until he stops destroying our shared atmosphere, then offer any help he may require.

Guess who's behind the sudden rush of age verification legislation?

In the US, is spending $26.3 Million to hire at least 86 Lobbyists from 40 lobbying firms, and lobbying in at least 45 states. It is confirmed that Meta wrote the Louisiana age verification bill.

In the EU, Meta is spending ten million euros annually on lobbying, retaining 18 lobbying firms.

Edit: this article is based on LLM generated material, and I haven't spent the time to check its sources

I've just published an illustrated podcast (47:16), Five Visuals of the Great Acceleration based on Tony Juniper's Book How We're F... Up Our Planet (2018), accompanied by stunning photographs. Be the the first to listen to it/watch it if you are interested in climate change action. Notice the emphasis on girls' education.

Please listen to the end, follow, like. More to come.

What impact are we having on global warming? Does a more sustainable way of living hold the answer to climate change and the other environmental problems facing our planet?

How We're F***ing Up Our Planet charts the dramatic explosion of human population and consumption. Using the latest scientific evidence and simple graphics, this wide-ranging and accessible book reveals how our growing use of energy, our increasing demand for food and water, and the rapid expansion of our cities are affecting the planet. It examines the threats and pressures facing the natural world, including Earth's climate, oceans, and biodiversity.

As well as explaining global patterns and showing how they are connected, How We're F***ing Up Our Planet looks into the future to explore the consequences of what we are doing. Importantly, it also looks at how we can reverse the current trends--for example, by adopting clean, low-carbon technologies--and live more sustainably into the future.

Saloni Subedi sits on the lap of her mother, Parbati Subedi, the wife of Dev Kumar Subedi, who was shot dead during the protests.

‘I believe this protest happened because people wanted change in Nepal and change in our leaders,’ Subedi said. ‘Those in power forgot about families like ours, for whom putting two meals on the table is a daily struggle.’

Subedi has received the 1.5m Nepalese rupees (£7,650) compensation that an interim government has provided to the families of 42 of the 77 killed that it declared martyrs.

Since Newt Gingrich is being discussed in the context of his mind-boggling stupidity, I figured I'd share a little DC story.

Weird story, I sat next to Newt at one of his favorite restaurants in DC. I was working in the Tidy Bowl Building* at the time, and there was a good Chinese place in the building that he really liked.

He was there with some random woman he was trying to impress with how smart he was.

We were at the table next to them trying not to laugh. It was the most pathetic display of pseudo-intellectualism I've ever seen.
