Agora, em 2026, as atenções se voltam para O Agente Secreto, de Kleber Mendonça Filho, que concorre em quatro categorias, incluindo Filme Internacional e Melhor Ator para Wagner Moura. Ao todo, são seis produções que levaram a nossa língua e a nossa cultura para o palco principal do cinema mundial, reafirmando o vigor e a qualidade das histórias contadas por aqui.

What do I need to do to a mastodon server to shadow-deactivate 4000 accounts or something? Or to put it another way: how much of the database size is fetching and storing content for only the unused accounts? This server is not sustainable on masto.host with our current usage fees being over twice the monthly donations.

I suspect most people outside of the UK won't have heard about the post office scandal, but it seems highly relevant to learn about now (given *waves* this):

For over 15 years, the software post offices in the UK had to use contained severe bugs, particular in accounting, that everyone at Fujitsu/horizon and the post blissfully ignored. Over 900 (!!!) postmasters were sentenced for alleged theft and fraud, some went to jail, some committed suicide. All because the software was shit and everyone who could do something about it didn't care and swept it under the rug.

Everything, including how it was uncovered, about this seems bizarre and Kafkaesque, but we better prepare for it to happen more often.

John M. Mossman Lock Collection

John M. Mossman (1846-1912) was a bank vault engineer who operated out of New York City in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His customers included the Stock Exchange and Bank of America, and he often found himself replacing older locks with new, upgraded versions. He kept hold of the locks that he replaced, which formed the basis for his 370-item lock collection. As a result, the collection focuses primarily on bank locks, including an extensive collection of time locks. In 1903 he donated the collection to the General Society, under the condition that it be made available to the public. The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded on November 17, 1785, and moved into its current headquarters in 1899. It describes its mission as "to serve and improve the quality of life of the people of the City of New York through its educational, philanthropic and cultural programs". The museum is by appointment only: I emailed on a Monday afternoon and was able to arrange an appointment for Tuesday morning. Upon entry, visitors are presented with a small brown leather-bound book entitled "The Lure of the Lock". This is the museum catalog, which opens with the following: > It is the mission of this museum to present one of the most fascinating sidelights on an industry which is peculiarly American. Locks are full of romance, and especially bank locks; for nearly every lock in this collection has protected untold millions in money and securities. After one has studied these locks for a month or two, one comes to almost love them, they are so interesting by reason of their peculiar mechanism. The catalog is dated 1928, but as you explore the collection you will realize that every item on display is accompanied by a small card that tells you which page in the book to consult for a description. Evidently the collection has remained almost constant since 1928, such that the catalog is still the best way to understand it! Who needs to see locks from the past 100 years when the ones from pre-1928 are so delightful already?

Brasil no top 3 da América Latina!

O Oscar acontece neste domingo (15) e o Brasil chega à cerimônia com destaque para “O Agente Secreto”, de Kleber Mendonça Filho, que concorre em quatro categorias.

Com as seis indicações, o Brasil é o terceiro país da América Latina com mais indicações na categoria de Melhor Filme Internacional no Oscar. Segundo análise da CNN Brasil, apenas 30 filmes latino-americanos foram indicados na categoria entre as 349 nomeações feitas entre 1957 e 2026.

O ranking é liderado pelo México, com nove indicações e uma vitória em 2019 com “Roma”. Em segundo lugar aparece a Argentina, com oito indicações e duas estatuetas: “A História Oficial”, em 1986 e “O Segredo dos Seus Olhos”, em 2010. Já o Chile venceu a categoria em 2018 com “Uma Mulher Fantástica”.

A Tale of Two Bills: Lawful Access Returns With Changes to Warrantless Access But Dangerous Backdoor Surveillance Risks Remain - Michael Geist

The decades-long battle over lawful access entered a new phase yesterday with the introduction of Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act. This bill follows the attempt last spring to bury lawful access provisions in Bill C-2, a border measures bill that was the new government’s first piece of substantive legislation. The lawful access elements of the bill faced an immediate backlash given the inclusion of unprecedented rules permitting widespread warrantless access to personal information. Those rules were on very shaky constitutional ground and the government ultimately decided to hit the reset button on lawful access by proceeding with the border measures in a different bill. Lawful access never dies, however. Bill C-22 cover the two main aspects of lawful access: law enforcement access to personal information held by communication service providers such as ISPs and wireless providers and the development of surveillance and monitoring capabilities within Canadian networks. In fact, the bill is separated into two with the first half dealing with “timely access to data and information” and the second establishing the Supporting Authorized Access to Information Act (SAAIA).
