thinking about how foreign the concept of an "upgrade cycle" is to me. i use devices until one of the following happens:

1. i outgrow their capacity
2. they break and i cannot repair them any more
3. it is impossible to get software/firmware updates that work with it... plus a few years usually

(mostly a mix of 2 and 3 depending on the device)

Turns out that setting ahci_device_limit="8" in the vm-bhyve config let it boot just fine.
