Leaning Tree

Here you see the Merced River early in it's journey at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley. The river is relatively calm at this point.and during the summer it is the sight of swimmers braving the cool water.
This image was taken during the middle of February towards the end of a big snowstorm that dropped a couple of feet of snow on the ground.

Leaning Tree

You’re looking at a quiet winter scene in Yosemite Valley, captured in black and white. The landscape feels still, cold, and hushed, as if the world has paused under fresh snowfall.

In the foreground, a single tall tree leans dramatically to the left, its trunk bending as though pushed over time by wind or weight. Its branches are bare and dusted with snow, giving it a delicate, skeletal appearance against the pale sky.

Beneath the tree, the Merced River flows gently from left to right. The water is dark and glassy, reflecting the shapes of nearby trees. Snow blankets the riverbanks, softening every edge and creating a smooth, unbroken white surface.

Across the river, a dense line of trees stands tall, their branches heavy with snow. Beyond them, the background fades into a soft, misty gray—snowfall and overcast sky blending together so the horizon almost disappears.

The overall mood is serene and contemplative. The leaning tree becomes the emotional anchor of the image—weathered, graceful, and enduring in the quiet of winter.
