What's truly astonishing is that, in her insanely complex multi-species multi-cultural universe -- in which all of her novels are set -- she nearly always gives *just* enough exposition that you understand the current scene, and in *just* enough time for that scene to unfold dramatically.

She's a hardcore world-builder, and what's amazing is how she manages to communicate her complex creations using tiny incremental dribs and drabs of exposition.
