Before Amazon, Microsoft and Google built today’s cloud, computer scientists built PlanetLab, a pioneering system that linked servers at research universities across the world.

Led by Larry Peterson at Princeton University, PlanetLab allowed researchers to test ideas and build new, innovative computer systems and networks.

Dozens of services that are now key to the modern internet, including content delivery networks for streaming, were prototyped on PlanetLab.
