Home from Venice, we geeked out watching documentaries on its origins. It was good for my Italian but also a good reminder that received history isn't truth. Truth is messy, just like any story told fully today. Venice's founding myth is a prime example. We loved digging into the granular politics instead. People haven't changed. And except for a few measley acres of land reclaimed from the sea around the world (now quickly sinking again) there's been no new land, and none previously uninhabited
