Jean-Michel Jarre was a maniac. Oxygen as a piece of music was quite extraordinary and in my opinion shouldn't have worked, but it was so bizarre and beautiful and somehow intangibly relatable that it sort of transcended all of that. Where artists like Emerson Lake and Palmer had a niche audience and Pink Floyd moved away from the more esoteric music to be better understood, Jarre just put himself out there and challenged people to like it or not. And this spawned what is now known as 'the synthesizer revolution'. But my favourite thing about him is that he looks like a ventriloquists dummy.
