Most hermit crabs are right-handed. From their viewpoint, the larger cheliped is on the right and the soft abdomen coils to the right, as well. Good thing, because most (99%) marine snail shells are also right-handed, spiraling clockwise. A Hairy hermit, Pagurus hirsutiusculus. All the Pagurus species are right-handed. Here the hermit, facing to our right, has his larger cheliped towards us; it's the hermit's right hand. The shell he's wearing, a very neat shell with a wide opening and tidy whorls, also spirals in a clockwise direction. (Mentally tip the shell so the spire points upward, turn the opening to face you; it will be on the right side. Turn it again, with the bottom towards you; the whorls from this view turn clockwise.)
This hermit is mostly greenish brown; the shell was whitish but now is coated with green algae.
