most composers seem to have seen getting their opera published as a necessary step for it to be performed at any theater beyond the one in which it premiered but some composers, notably Handel, used sale of scores as a significant source of income. Handel frequently revised his operas (like adding new songs, as he did for Giulio Cesare) to entice opera companies to pay full price for a new score rather than acquire a used one
