My #NixOS server setup was born 3 days after my firstborn child, and it has been growing along with. Today is another milestone. #selfhosting
As a sysadmin running servers on #NixOS used by many people, here is my upgrade prosess:
1. Read the release notes thoroughly and make note of things that needs to be fixed/changed.
2. Make those changes in the Nix config.
3. Do a local build.
4. If the build passes, deploy on one machine.
5. If the deployment goes fine, check the server monitoring for issues.
6. Do manual smoke tests for all the services.
7. If everything looks fine, deploy everywhere.
Thanks to the great stability of #NixOS, the process usually does not take more than an hour.
