Why is it that cats will choose a soft bed to lie on in preference to a hard floor, but if you then put a hard laptop on the soft bed they will then prefer to sit on that?

Update: cat has found something he likes lying on even more than he likes lying on the laptop

Me, a white woman with dark curly hair, glasses and an expression of resignation to not moving until I am released, lying on a bed with a fluffy white cat on my chest. My head is tilted away from the tuna breath, and his little paws are on my windpipe in a manner that is either affectionate or threatening, it's sometimes hard to tell with cats
