In the UK, the Department for Work and Pensions used an algorithm to detect housing benefit fraud. @TheGuardian revealed that the system wrongly flagged over 200.000 people as high risk. However, two-thirds of those claims were perfectly legitimate. That’s thousands of lives disrupted - and public resources wasted - because an algorithm got it wrong.
