These elderly Thoda women of the Western Ghats identify cryptogam species (lichens and mosses) by their local names. This is an important group of plants in Thoda culture that is often overlooked in modern projects to conserve biodiversity; traditional knowledge contributes to the discovery of new species used for medicinal purposes and food. #India, 2010
