Watch out! This frog can bite. Meet the giant African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus). Weighing more than 2 lbs (0.9 kg), this hefty amphibian munches on other frogs, small birds, and even small mammals. It uses its strong jaw and large tooth-like odontodes to bite and hold on to prey. Much of its time is spent in a burrow underground; when dry season comes, it hibernates, staying dormant for months by bringing its bodily functions to a near-complete stop.

During this time, it also creates a cocoon-like covering over its body by shedding multiple layers of skin. Upon heavy rain, it will emerge from its burrow to breed.
