German chancellor backs calls for two-state solution

Following a meeting with Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, German Chancellor Merz said:

The second phase must begin in #Gaza according to President Trump’s plan, and Israel must sometimes be under surveillance.
Hamas must not have any role in Gaza.
⁠We want a new Middle East that recognises a Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel.
Negotiations on this are necessary now, and a Palestinian state at the end of the process.
