Preface
Why a book on “epigenetics and rare diseases?” The answer is that epigenetics, as well as all -omics fields of study, such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, have allowed a real revolution in all branches of medicine in recent years. On the other hand, the molecular mechanisms responsible for the epigenetic modifications of the genome due to environmental stress factors—and the part that lifestyle plays for each of us—are well known today.

We gradually switched from a linear medicine model having the genetic background and the altered immune-inflammatory response as key actors (possibly activated by exogenous infectious agents) to a much more articulated model, which involves the participation of more players, including the microbiome, the role of the environment and epigenetic modulations, all within a continuous cross-talk between complex biological systems.
