Trump spoke to Maduro before Christmas. He said he wanted to see Maduro leave office before Christmas. There were negotiations between the two.

Maduro was seeking immunity for himself, his wife, and several members of his family, as well as safe passage.

Trump refused to guarantee any of them, so Maduro stayed where he was.
