US federal prosecutors have opened a criminal inquiry into the US Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell.

Mr Powell says he was threatened with criminal charges because he had set interest rates based on economic analysis rather than politics.

"The world is built on trust, and this is a direct attack on the trust that the world can have in the US and its institutions — both its justice system and its central bank."
